Few products are sold as aggressively in Bangladesh as "fairness" and "whitening" creams. The promise is always the same — fairer skin, fast. The truth is less flattering.
Your skin tone is mostly genetic
Melanin protects your skin from the sun. No cream can permanently change your natural tone, and you would not want it to — less melanin means more sun damage. What you CAN safely improve is evenness, dark spots and dullness.
Why "fast fairness" creams are dangerous
A cream that visibly lightens skin in days is almost always using:
- Mercury — toxic, accumulates in kidneys and nerves.
- High-dose hydroquinone — unsupervised use causes ochronosis (permanent darkening).
- Steroids — thin skin, steroid acne, dependency.
Check any suspicious cream against our banned list, and see our full guide to products to avoid.
What actually works (safely)
- Niacinamide — fades dark spots, evens tone, strengthens the barrier. Browse niacinamide serums.
- Vitamin C — brightens and protects against environmental dullness.
- Sunscreen (SPF) — the single most effective "brightening" step, because it stops new dark spots.
- Alpha arbutin / azelaic acid — gentle, evidence-based tone-evening actives.
These take 6–12 weeks — not 7 days — but they are safe and the results last.
A healthier goal
Aim for healthy, even, glowing skin — not a different skin colour. Start with sunscreen + niacinamide, and pick verified products from TheSkinProof. Not sure where to begin? The free skin quiz builds a safe routine for you.
