Quick answer
Most beard problems — itching, flaking, dullness — are skin problems, not hair problems. Treat the skin under the beard and the beard follows.

A beard traps sweat, sebum and dust against the skin all day — and in this climate that is a lot of all three. Cleanser and moisturizer have to reach the skin, not just sit on the hair.
1. Cleanse the skin, not only the beard
Work a gentle cleanser down to the skin with your fingertips. Rinse thoroughly — residue under a beard is a common cause of itching.
2. Moisturize the skin underneath
Press moisturizer in with fingertips through the hair. Beard dryness is usually skin dryness.
3. Beard oil is for comfort, not cleaning
It softens hair and reduces itch on dry skin. It does not replace washing, and heavy oils can worsen flaking if yeast is involved.
4. Flaking under a beard is often seborrheic dermatitis
The same *Malassezia* yeast behind dandruff. If a moisturizer does not fix it, an antifungal shampoo used on the beard with contact time usually does.
5. Comb, and trim the neckline
Reduces trapped debris and ingrown hairs along the neck.
6. Do not skip sunscreen at the cheekbones
A beard does not protect the skin above it, and that is where pigmentation shows.
When to see a doctor
Painful lumps, spreading pustules, or bald patches within the beard — the last can be a medical condition rather than grooming.
