Quick answer
Wash your face and body before sweat dries, change out of damp kit straight away, use your own towel, and wear a sweat-resistant SPF 50 sunscreen for outdoor sport. Those four habits prevent most gym and sports skin problems.

For men who train or play sport, most skin problems come from one thing: sweat, oil and friction sitting on the skin for too long. The fix is four habits:
- Wash within 30 minutes of training: COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser for the face (a small tube that fits in a gym bag), and CeraVe SA Body Wash if you get back or chest acne.
- Change out of sweaty kit straight away.
- Use your own towel, and lay it on gym benches and machines.
- For outdoor sport, a sweat-resistant SPF 50: Missha Water Proof Sun Milk or Omi Sun Bears Active Protect Milk.
Sweat is not the problem; trapped sweat is
Sweat cools you down, which is good. Trouble starts when it dries on the skin, stays trapped under a tight jersey or vest, and mixes with oil, dust and grime from machine handles. Three problems follow:
- Sweat acne on the face: along the forehead and hairline, especially if you train in a headband or cap.
- Acne on the back, chest and shoulders: where tight vests and backpack straps rub. There is more in our guide to back acne.
- Fungal bumps or rashes: many small itchy bumps of the same size, or round red itchy patches in the groin and inner thighs. These are not ordinary acne.

Before, during and after training
Before
- Start with a clean face. If you go straight from the office to the gym, rinse with water so the day’s sunscreen and dust do not get pushed into pores.
- Indoors you do not need sunscreen. For outdoor sport, apply it 15 minutes before you go out, on face, ears, neck, hands and arms.
During
- Blot sweat; do not rub. Rubbing injures the skin.
- Lay your own towel on a machine or bench before sitting. Get into the habit of wiping handles before and after use.
- Keep sweaty hands off your face.
After
- Shower, or at least wash your face, within 30 minutes. A pea-sized amount of face wash for 30 seconds, then rinse.
- If you have back acne: spread the body wash on your back and chest and leave it for one to two minutes before rinsing, so the active ingredient has time to work.
- If you cannot shower soon: wipe your face with micellar water on cotton. It does not replace a proper wash, but it is far better than nothing.
- Then a light moisturizer. Frequent washing dries skin, so do not skip it.
- Change your clothes. Riding home in a sweat-soaked vest is a major cause of back acne.
Outdoor sport: cricket, football and sun
An afternoon of cricket or football means two or three hours of direct sun. Sweat-resistant sunscreens are made to hold up better in sweat, but none lasts all day. The rules:
- Before you go out, a two-finger line on face and neck, and a separate layer on hands and arms.
- At breaks (change of innings or half-time), blot the sweat and reapply.
- Wear a cap or hat, and an SPF lip balm to prevent cracked lips.
- Drink plenty of water; if you feel dizzy or sick, get into the shade. Heatstroke is far more dangerous than any skin problem.

Towel and equipment hygiene
- Wash your gym towel after every use.
- Wash or wipe boxing gloves, helmets, elbow and knee pads and headbands at least weekly, and dry them in the sun.
- Shoes and socks: fresh dry socks every session, and rotate shoes so they dry out. Itching or peeling between the toes can be a fungal sign.
- Never share razors, towels or gamchas.
How to recognise a fungal rash
Ordinary acne spots vary in size, some big and some small, and usually do not itch. Fungal bumps are nearly all the same size, clustered together, and itchy, especially when you sweat. Round red patches with a raised edge in the groin, inner thighs or along the waistband can also be fungal. Acne products will not help; read sweat and fungal acne and see a doctor for treatment.
The reality of Bangladeshi gyms and fields
Many neighbourhood gyms have no air conditioning, and during load-shedding even the fans stop, so you sweat twice as much. In the monsoon the humidity is so high that sweat barely dries, which is why back and chest acne often flare in that season. Riding a bus or rickshaw home for 40 minutes in a wet vest undoes the effort, so change at the gym. If your home has hard water, moisturize your body a little after showering too, or dryness and itching build up.
Mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until the sweat dries. The longer you wait, the more chance pores clog.
- Scrubbing hard with harsh soap. Acne does not improve; skin burns.
- Wearing the same jersey or vest two days without washing.
- Heavy creams or oils before training.
- Picking body acne. Back marks last even longer than facial ones.
When to see a doctor
- Large, painful acne across the back or chest.
- Round, spreading, itchy red patches, or cracked skin between the toes.
- Pus, spreading redness or fever around any spot.
- A sudden burst of acne after starting a supplement.
See a dermatologist before buying an ointment from a pharmacy; the wrong ointment can make a fungal rash worse.

Frequently asked questions
How soon should I wash my face after a workout?
Within about 30 minutes, before sweat dries on the skin. Use a gentle salicylic acid cleanser for 30 seconds, rinse, and follow with a light moisturizer. If there is no sink, wipe your face with micellar water on cotton until you can wash properly.
What causes back acne in men who go to the gym?
Sweat trapped under tight vests, backpack straps and friction clogs pores on the back and chest. Shower soon after training, change out of damp clothes straight away and use a salicylic acid body wash left on for one to two minutes. See a doctor for large, painful spots.
Which sunscreen works for cricket or football in Bangladesh?
A sweat-resistant SPF 50 such as Missha Water Proof Sun Milk, or Omi Sun Bears Active Protect Milk on a budget. Apply it 15 minutes before going out on face, ears, neck and arms, then blot and reapply at every break, because no sunscreen lasts a full afternoon of sweat.
