Quick answer
In summer, teen acne is driven by sweat and oil, so use a light gel cleanser, wash after sports and use an oil-free moisturizer. In winter, dry skin still breaks out, so switch to a hydrating cleanser and a slightly richer moisturizer. In both seasons, do not pick, and see a doctor for large, painful pimples.

Teen acne lasts all year, but its triggers change with the season, so the routine should change a little too:
- Summer (April to September): the problem is sweat and oil. Use a light gel cleanser such as Simple Refreshing Facial Wash Gel, wash after sports, and use an oil-free moisturizer such as Deconstruct Oil-Free Moisturizer. For regular breakouts, COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser three nights a week.
- Winter (November to February): the problem is dryness and harsh products. Switch to a hydrating cleanser such as CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, use more moisturizer such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion, and cut back on acids.
- In both seasons: no picking, sunscreen every morning, and a doctor for large, painful pimples.
Why acne happens, whatever the season
Between 13 and 17, hormones make the skin produce more oil. When that oil and dead cells get stuck in a pore, small whiteheads and blackheads form. Add bacteria and inflammation, and you get red, swollen pimples. This is normal, and it is not caused by being unclean.
The season does not change this basic cause, but it adds fuel: sweat and humidity in summer, dry and weakened skin in winter. That is why the two routines differ. The wider background, including exam stress and sleep, is in teenage acne and exam-stress breakouts.
The summer plan: managing sweat and oil
Why it gets worse: in Bangladesh’s heat, sweat does not dry. Sweat, oil and road dust build up on the face. Sweat trapped under caps, helmets or masks drives breakouts on the forehead and jaw.
Morning:
- A light gel cleanser, pea-sized, for 30 seconds.
- A light, oil-free moisturizer.
- A matte or gel sunscreen such as Dot & Key Cica Calming Mattifying SPF50+.
During the day:
- After sports, PT or coaching, wash your face within 15 to 20 minutes. Plain water is fine if you have no cleanser.
- Take off the cap or helmet and press the forehead dry with a clean handkerchief.
- If oil builds up at midday, press a tissue on it. Do not rub.
Night:
- Cleanse to remove sunscreen and the day’s dust.
- Salicylic cleanser three nights a week (rules below), regular cleanser on other nights.
- Light moisturizer.
Summer extras: change pillowcases twice a week. If you oil your hair, keep it off the forehead, and wash it out in the morning if applied at night. Wipe your phone screen now and then, since it presses on your cheek. For back and chest breakouts, see body acne from sweat.
The winter plan: dry skin still breaks out
Why it happens: many teens are surprised to break out in winter when skin feels less oily. The reasons:
- Continuing to use a harsh summer foam cleanser, which dries and irritates the skin.
- Dry skin sheds dead cells unevenly, which clogs pores.
- Applying heavy, greasy creams to the face in the cold.
- Drinking less water and taking long hot showers.
Morning:
- A hydrating, low-foam cleanser. If skin feels very dry, a plain water rinse in the morning is fine.
- A little more moisturizer, with a second layer on dry areas.
- Sunscreen. Winter sun still darkens acne marks.
Night:
- Gentle cleanser.
- Cut the salicylic cleanser to one or two nights a week, or stop it entirely if the skin stings.
- Moisturizer. For very dry skin, a panthenol-based moisturizer such as Minimalist 10% Vitamin B5 Face Moisturizer.

Gentle actives: start low and slow
The idea that “stronger is better” does the most damage at this age.
- Salicylic acid cleanser: a wash-off product, left on for 30 to 60 seconds. Start at three nights a week after a two-night patch test on the jaw. Stop if it stings, reddens or peels.
- Benzoyl peroxide: low-strength products (such as 2.5%) are sometimes used, but they dry the skin and can bleach clothes and pillowcases. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before starting, and patch test.
- What to avoid: strong peels, high-strength AHA or BHA serums, or three or four acids together. Retinol and retinoid creams are not for self-use; if needed, a doctor decides.
- Home remedies: no lemon, toothpaste or baking soda. They cause irritation and marks.
Picking: the biggest enemy
Touching pimples in class, while studying or in front of the mirror is very common. But squeezing pushes inflammation deeper, makes the pimple bigger and raises the risk of dark marks or pits.
- Put a pimple patch on large pimples at night so fingers cannot reach them.
- Keep nails short.
- Keep the mirror off the study desk.
- If marks remain, treat that as a separate issue; do not rush to strong mark-fading creams.
For parents
- Acne does not mean your child is not keeping their face clean. Help with a simple routine instead of scolding.
- Keep them away from “acne-free in seven days” or colour-changing claims in ads.
- Do not hand over your own night cream, serum or acid products.
- Check that products are genuine. Every product on TheSkinProof is batch-checked against the importer invoice, and any product can be verified with the free product checker. A proven counterfeit is refunded at 2× the price.
- Take it seriously if acne is affecting your child’s mood. It is not just about looks.
When to see a doctor
In any season, see a dermatologist if:
- There are large, hard, painful pimples or lumps under the skin that last for weeks.
- Pits or dark marks remain after pimples heal.
- There is no improvement after 8 to 12 weeks of a consistent gentle routine.
- Acne appears suddenly and severely, along with irregular periods or unusual facial hair (in girls).
- Acne is causing embarrassment, low mood or reluctance to go to school.
A doctor can prescribe the right treatment. Do not start pharmacy creams or oral medicines on your own.
Frequently asked questions
Why do teenagers get acne in winter?
Dry winter skin has a weaker outer layer, dead cells build up and block pores, and many teens keep using a harsh summer cleanser. Heavy creams, hair oil and drinking less water add to it. The fix is a gentle hydrating cleanser, a light-to-medium moisturizer and cutting back on acids rather than adding more.
How should teens change their acne routine in summer?
Use a light gel cleanser twice a day, wash after sports or a sweaty commute, and switch to an oil-free moisturizer. If breakouts are regular, a mild salicylic cleanser three nights a week, after a patch test, can help. Wipe sweat from under caps and helmets, and wear a light, non-greasy sunscreen.
Is it safe for teenagers to pop pimples?
No. Squeezing can push inflammation deeper, making the pimple bigger and longer-lasting and raising the risk of dark marks or pits. To break the habit, a hydrocolloid pimple patch such as COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch can be placed over a pimple at night. Large or painful pimples need a dermatologist, not squeezing.
