More actives is not better. Combining the wrong ones at the same time can sting, dry out, or waste the products. But some "rules" online are outdated myths. Here is the honest version.
Do NOT layer these together
- Retinol + AHA/BHA (same night) — both exfoliate/renew; together = irritation and a damaged barrier. Alternate nights instead. See retinol, AHA vs BHA.
- Retinol + benzoyl peroxide (at once) — can deactivate each other and irritate. Use one AM, one PM, or alternate.
- Multiple exfoliating acids at once (AHA + BHA + a scrub) — classic over-exfoliation → barrier damage.
- Strong vitamin C + strong acids/retinol (same time) — can irritate sensitive skin. Split them: vitamin C in AM, retinol/acid in PM. See AM vs PM.
Myths you can ignore
- "Vitamin C and niacinamide cancel out" — outdated lab myth; in real formulas they are fine together. See niacinamide vs vitamin C.
- "Never use two serums" — you can, if they are compatible (e.g. hyaluronic acid + niacinamide).
Safe combos
- Hyaluronic acid + almost anything (it is just hydration). See HA.
- Niacinamide + most actives — a great team player.
- Any active + sunscreen next morning — mandatory, not optional.
The simple rule
Introduce one active at a time, do not stack strong actives in the same step, and always moisturise + sunscreen. When unsure, split actives across AM/PM or alternate nights. Full order: the layering guide.
