Quick answer
Lips have almost no oil glands and no barrier to speak of. That changes what actually works — and why licking and peeling keep the cycle going.

Lip skin is thinner than facial skin, has almost no oil glands, and no protective layer of its own. In dry air it loses water immediately.
1. Stop licking
Saliva evaporates and takes moisture with it, leaving lips drier than before.
2. Never peel the flakes
Peeling tears living skin underneath and causes bleeding and scabs.
3. Use an occlusive balm, not a glossy one
Petrolatum, lanolin, shea, beeswax. Many tinted or flavoured balms contain menthol or camphor, which sting and dry further.
4. Reapply before bed
Overnight is when repair happens.
5. Check for a cause
Persistent cracking at the corners can indicate iron or B-vitamin deficiency. See a doctor if it does not resolve.
