The short answer

Three things are enough to get through winter in a hostel or mess: a gentle face wash, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Normal To Dry Skin; Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream for face and hands; and Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter for the lips. Together they stay within a small budget; the sums are in the table below. If your budget allows a fourth item, add the sunscreen Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide SPF50+ PA++++ or the body lotion Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Glow Body Lotion. Three rules: short baths in cold-water bathrooms, cream within 3 minutes of every bath and face wash, and never share lip balm, razors or towels.

Why hostel winters are different

At home, winter means hot water, a heavy quilt and a parent reminding you to put cream on. In a hostel it is the opposite: cold water in the bathroom, early classes, late nights studying for exams, tea and instant noodles, and sitting next to a roommate's heater. Add a tight wallet. The result is chapped lips, a tight face, rough backs of the hands and sudden breakouts in exam week.

If money is really tight, skip the face wash and start with just the Nivea cream and the Vaseline lip balm; in winter, rinsing your face with plain water in the morning is fine.

Why these three:

The daily routine, hostel edition

Before an early class

  1. Rinse your face with water only. If the cold water is painful, a ten-second rinse is enough.
  2. Pat dry, then two pea-sized dabs of Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream on the face and one on the backs of both hands.
  3. Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter on the lips.
  4. If you will be walking around campus at midday or on the field, apply two finger-lengths of sunscreen after the cream.

Between classes

After washing your hands, a drop of cream, and balm on the lips. If your face feels tight, do not splash water on it; press on a pea-sized amount of cream instead.

Bathing in a cold-water bathroom

  1. Keep the bath short, 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. You can heat a mug of water in an electric kettle or jug and mix it into the bucket to make it lukewarm. If you use an immersion rod, switch it off and unplug it before touching the water; never handle the rod with wet hands.
  3. Soap only on the underarms, groin and feet.
  4. Within 3 minutes of the bath, cream or body lotion, especially on hands, legs, elbows and knees. No body lotion? A few drops of glycerin mixed into a little rose water, spread on damp skin, works; glycerin holds water in the skin. Too much thick glycerin on its own feels sticky.

Evening or before bed

  1. Wash your face with a pea-sized amount of Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Normal To Dry Skin. It lifts dust and sunscreen.
  2. A little more cream on the face, the backs of the hands and the finger creases.
  3. A thick layer of balm on the lips.
  4. If your heels crack, apply cream and sleep in socks. We do not have a dedicated foot cream on our shelf right now, so use your hand cream or body lotion thickly on the heels at night.

Sharing rules

Everything gets shared in a hostel, but some things never should be:

  • Lip balm. The cold sore virus spreads through lip balm.
  • Razors, nail clippers, tweezers. Contact with blood can spread infection.
  • Towels and pillow covers. Ringworm and scabies are very common in hostels and spread through towels and bedding.
  • Dipping fingers into a shared tub of cream. If a friend needs some, scoop it with your own clean finger onto their hand. A pump or tube is even better.
  • Write your name on your things and keep them in a drawer, away from sun and the heater.

Heaters, exam nights and more

  • Shared heaters. Do not sit right up against the heater to warm your hands or legs. Long, close heat exposure can leave a net-like brown mark on the skin, and it dries the skin further. Sit an arm's length or more away, keep a bucket of water in the room, and switch the heater off before sleeping. Never put blankets or clothes on top of it.
  • Exam nights. Even if you sleep at 3 am, wash your face and apply cream before bed; it takes a minute. Keep a water bottle and lip balm on the desk. Drink water between cups of tea or coffee. Do not pick at pimples; they usually settle once sleep returns after exams. For exam-time breakouts, read teenage acne and student skincare.
  • Cycling or walking to class in the morning fog. Cover the lower face with a scarf.

Common mistakes

  • Licking chapped lips or peeling off the skin.
  • Putting toothpaste, lemon or baking soda on the face at your study desk. They irritate the skin and do not clear acne or marks.
  • Using a pharmacy "ring cream" or steroid-mixed cream on ringworm or itching yourself. It often makes ringworm spread.
  • Borrowing an unlabelled skin-lightening cream from a friend.
  • Drinking too little water in winter.

The Bangladesh reality

Most halls and messes in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Sylhet or Chattogram have no hot water in the bathrooms. In the north, early-morning temperatures drop a long way. Budgets are limited, so there is a pull towards cheap loose creams from the market, where it is hard to tell genuine from fake. Three genuine products used regularly do far more than ten doubtful ones. For the full winter day routine, read the 24-hour winter skincare routine.

When to see a doctor

  • Itching between the fingers, on the wrists or waist, worse at night, and your roommates have it too. This may be scabies, and everyone in the room needs treatment at the same time.
  • Round, itchy patches with a red edge that keep growing (ringworm). See a doctor rather than using a steroid-mixed cream.
  • Small fluid-filled blisters beside the lips that keep coming back.
  • Acne that is very painful, forms large lumps or leaves scars.
  • Cracked hands that bleed or ooze pus, or that do not improve after two weeks of cream.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest winter skincare kit for hostel students?

Three products cover it: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Normal To Dry Skin as a gentle face wash, Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream for face and hands, and Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter for lips. Rinse with water in the morning and apply cream and balm; at night wash with the cleanser and use a little more cream.

How do I bathe in winter with only cold water?

Keep it to five to seven minutes, soap only the underarms, groin and feet, and if you can, mix a mug of kettle-heated water into the bucket. Within three minutes of drying off, apply cream or body lotion to the hands, legs, elbows and knees so the skin does not tighten.

Is it safe to share lip balm or cream in a hostel?

Do not share lip balm, razors, nail clippers or towels; cold sores, ringworm and scabies spread this way in hostels. If a friend needs cream, scoop it with your own clean finger onto their hand rather than letting them dip into your tub. Pumps and tubes are more hygienic than jars.

Does sitting next to a room heater dry out skin?

Yes. Heaters dry the room air, and warming your hands or legs right against one dries the skin further; long, close exposure can even leave a net-like brown mark. Sit at least an arm's length away, keep a bucket of water in the room, turn it off before sleep, and moisturise at bedtime.
