Quick answer
At 13–17, three things are enough: a gentle face wash, a light moisturiser and an SPF 30–50 sunscreen in the morning. Add one gentle acne step only if breakouts appear, not a ten-step routine or retinol.

Between 13 and 17, three steps are enough for healthy skin:
- A gentle face wash, morning and night: for example Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash Gel or COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser.
- A light moisturiser: for example Simple Kind To Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser, or Dot & Key Cica Calming Oil Free Moisturizer for oily skin.
- Sunscreen in the morning, SPF 30–50: for example Deconstruct Gel Sunscreen SPF 55+ or the mineral-filter Axis-Y Complete No-Stress Physical SPF50.
Without acne, nothing more is needed. With acne, add one gentle step to these three, and see a doctor for moderate or painful acne.
Why only three steps?
In the teenage years, hormones push the skin to make more oil, especially on the forehead, nose and chin (the T-zone). But teenage skin also repairs itself well and has plenty of collagen. It does not need anti-ageing serums, retinol, heavy night creams or a ten-step K-beauty routine. Layering many products actually weakens the skin barrier, which leads to stinging, redness and, ironically, more breakouts.
What each step does:
- Face wash removes sweat, dust, excess oil and sunscreen.
- Moisturiser holds water in the skin, so it does not feel tight after washing and does not respond by making even more oil.
- Sunscreen protects from UV. Tanning and acne marks turning darker both reduce when you wear it daily.
Not sure of your skin type? Try a 2-minute home test: wash your face, apply nothing, and after an hour check where it feels oily and where it feels tight.
The morning and night routine
Morning (before school or college, 2 minutes)
- Wet your face, lather a pea-sized amount of face wash in your hands, massage gently for 30–40 seconds and rinse well. Pat dry with a towel; do not rub.
- Spread a pea-sized amount of moisturiser thinly over the face. On very oily skin in hot weather, a gel sunscreen can partly do the moisturiser’s job.
- Finish with sunscreen: about a two-finger-length line (roughly a quarter teaspoon) for face and neck. Do not forget the ears and the back of the neck.
Night (after coaching, 2 minutes)
- Wash your face. This removes the day’s dust and sunscreen.
- Moisturiser.
That is it. No sunscreen at night.
A real school and coaching day
For a student in Bangladesh, the day usually means school in the morning, coaching in the afternoon, and dust and sun on the rickshaw or bus in between. What helps on that kind of day:
- Carry small things. Blot sweat with a handkerchief or tissue instead of rubbing. After playing in the field at tiffin time, a splash of plain water is fine.
- Reapply sunscreen if you are out at midday. Assembly in the sun, sports, or walking home at noon all count; reapply after 2–3 hours outdoors. Easy ways to do that are in the teen sunscreen guide.
- Touch your face less. Resting a cheek on your hand while studying and picking at spots both make acne and marks worse.
- Keep pillow covers and masks clean. Change the pillow cover at least once a week.
Budget: what it costs
Three products do not cost much. Prices below are as of 27 September 2026; the product page shows the current price.
| Product | Best for | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash Gel | All skin types, including sensitive | 150 ml | ৳749 |
| COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser | Oily, combination | 20 ml | ৳499 |
| Simple Kind To Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser | Normal to dry | 125 ml | ৳749 |
| Dot & Key Cica Calming Oil Free Moisturizer | Oily, acne-prone | 15 ml | ৳449 |

For example, the Simple face wash, the Simple moisturiser and the Deconstruct gel sunscreen together come to about ৳2,497 and last two to three months (the sunscreen runs out a little sooner). Per month, that is less than most tiffin budgets. For an even tighter budget, see budget skincare for students.
If acne appears: add one thing only
A few spots in the teenage years are completely normal. For mild acne (a few small bumps, blackheads, whiteheads):
- Switch the face wash to a gentle salicylic acid cleanser such as COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser. Start once a day, at night. Because it is rinsed off, it stays on the skin only briefly, which keeps it relatively gentle.
- For one or two swollen spots, stick on a COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch. It stops the picking and leaves fewer marks.
Do not stack three or four actives (salicylic acid, AHA, retinol, benzoyl peroxide) at once. Patch-test anything new on one side of the jaw for two or three days first. More on acne is in teenage acne and exam-stress breakouts.
The most common mistakes
- Washing the face four or five times a day. The skin dries out and makes more oil. Face wash twice a day is enough; plain water in between.
- Borrowing adult creams. A parent’s or older sibling’s retinol, anti-ageing or glow cream is not made for teenage skin.
- Fairness creams or local mixed creams. These often contain steroids or harmful ingredients that thin the skin and trigger acne. The full avoid list is in what under-18s should not use.
- Lemon, toothpaste or baking soda. These can burn the skin and darken marks.
- Sunscreen only for outings. The daily trip to and from school is the biggest sun exposure most teens get.
A note for parents
If your child suddenly asks for lots of products or wants to copy a ten-step routine from social media, explain the three-step idea calmly instead of scolding. A few things to watch:
- Do not buy unnamed, "mixed" or fairness creams from local shops.
- If acne is heavy, painful, or leaves marks or pits, see a dermatologist without delay. There is nothing shameful about it, and early treatment means fewer scars.
- Teasing about acne, or comments like "it is because you eat fried food", weigh heavily at this age. Offer support instead.
- Buy genuine products. A counterfeit cleanser or sunscreen can cause both irritation and breakouts. At TheSkinProof every product is batch-checked against the importer invoice, anyone can verify a product with the free product checker, and a product proven counterfeit is refunded at 2× the price.
Small adjustments for Bangladesh weather
- In heat and humidity, gel moisturisers and gel sunscreens feel best; skip heavy creams.
- In winter, keep the same routine but use a little more moisturiser or move to a slightly richer cream. Keep a lip balm like Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter handy.
- With hard water, if the face feels tight after washing, put moisturiser on straight away.
When to see a doctor
- Acne that is swollen, red, painful, or deep and lumpy (cystic).
- Acne that heals into pits or dark marks.
- No improvement after three months of a steady routine.
- Itching, blistering, swelling or a spreading rash after using a product. Stop the product and see a doctor.
At this age, good skin does not come from expensive products. It comes from doing three steps every day, sleeping well, drinking water and keeping hands off the face.
Frequently asked questions
What skincare does a 13 to 17 year old need?
A 13 to 17 year old needs only three products: a gentle face wash, a light moisturiser and an SPF 30 to 50 sunscreen. Use all three in the morning and just the face wash and moisturiser at night. Serums, toners and night creams are unnecessary unless there is a specific problem such as acne.
Should teenagers use retinol or anti-ageing serums?
No, teenagers do not need retinol or anti-ageing serums, and these can cause dryness and irritation. Teenage skin repairs itself well on its own. If acne is heavy, see a dermatologist rather than self-treating with strong actives, so treatment can be chosen for the child’s age and skin.
What should a teen add to their routine if they get acne?
Add just one gentle step, such as switching to a salicylic acid face wash used once a day at night, and use pimple patches on individual swollen spots. Do not stack several actives at once, patch-test anything new first, and see a doctor if acne is painful, cystic or leaves scars.
