Quick answer
Hair that feels coated, flat and greasy soon after washing is usually buildup, not oiliness. Washing more often makes it worse.

Shop verified shampoos →What buildup is
A residue film from conditioner, serums, oils, dry shampoo and hard-water minerals that ordinary shampoo does not fully remove. It flattens hair, blocks moisture, and can look exactly like dandruff — but the flakes are product, not skin.
1. Buildup or dandruff?
Buildup flakes are larger, greasy, and come off in sheets when scratched. Dandruff flakes are drier, smaller and keep coming back after washing.
2. Clarify once every week or two
A clarifying or chelating shampoo removes the film. Not more often — it strips.
3. Keep conditioner off the scalp
Mid-lengths and ends only. Conditioner at the roots is the most common cause.
4. Rinse for longer than feels necessary
Under-rinsing is the second most common cause, especially with thick hair.
5. Reconsider daily leave-ins and dry shampoo
They accumulate. If you use them daily, clarify weekly.
If it is hard water
Mineral film needs a chelating shampoo specifically, and a filtered final rinse helps. See hard water and hair.
