Quick answer
On night shift, build your routine around your sleep, not the clock: a light moisturiser before your shift, and a cleanse plus moisturiser before you sleep. If you go out in daylight, you still need sunscreen. No cream erases dark circles; protecting your sleep block matters most.

On night shift, your skincare routine should follow your sleep, not the clock. Your "morning" is the time before your shift, and your "night" is the time after your shift, before you sleep.
- Before your shift: rinse with water or a gentle face wash, then a light moisturiser such as Minimalist 10% Vitamin B5 Face Moisturizer. Sunscreen if you head out in afternoon sun.
- After your shift, before sleep: cleanse with Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash Gel, or CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser for dry skin, then moisturise.
- If the ride home is sunny: keep Deconstruct Gel Sunscreen SPF 55+ in your bag.
- Dark circles: creams may help a little, but a fixed sleep time and a dark room are the real fix.
What night shift does to skin
Call centre agents, hospital nurses and doctors, garment factory night lines, security guards, freelancers working for overseas clients: the experience is similar. Skin looks dull, there are dark circles and puffiness, occasional sudden breakouts, and skin feels tight after a full night in air conditioning.
A few common causes sit behind this. The body runs on a natural day-night rhythm, and skin is thought to do much of its repair during night-time sleep. Short or broken sleep makes skin look tired. Add a full night of AC (dry air), too little water, a lot of tea and coffee, and fried snacks at 3 am. No cream makes up for all of that, but a sensible routine limits the damage.
The routine, built around your sleep
Say your shift runs 10 pm to 6 am and you sleep from 8 am to 3 pm.
After waking, before your shift (afternoon to evening):
- Rinse with water; use a gentle face wash if you feel oily.
- A pea-sized amount of light moisturiser. Office AC pulls water from skin all night, so do not skip this.
- Sunscreen if you leave before about 5 pm or will sit in sun on a bus or rickshaw. After dark, you do not need it.
During the shift:
- Keep a water bottle on your desk and sip every hour.
- If your face feels very dry, add a little moisturiser rather than waiting until bedtime.
- For chapped lips, a lip balm or something like Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.
After the shift, before sleep (morning):
- Wash your face to remove the night’s oil, sweat and any makeup. 30 to 40 seconds, lukewarm water.
- Moisturiser: a little more for dry skin, a gel for oily skin.
- Any eye product goes on now.
- Make the room dark with thick curtains or an eye mask. Better daytime sleep shows on your skin.
That is the whole routine. Nobody sticks to seven steps when exhausted. For what to keep when time is short, see the 5-minute routine for busy people.

Do night workers need sunscreen?
Yes, whenever you are out in daylight. Many night-shift workers head home at 6 or 7 am. The sun feels mild then, but in Dhaka it gets strong quickly after 8 am, and half an hour by a bus window or in a rickshaw is real sun exposure. If the ride home is sunny, put sunscreen on before you leave work. And if you go out during the day for the bank or the bazaar, definitely wear it.
If you are only indoors at night, you do not need sunscreen. You will hear a lot about screen light, but evidence that screens damage skin is very limited compared with the sun. There is no need to buy sunscreen for night-time desk work.
An honest word on dark circles
Dark circles have several causes: genetics, blood vessels showing through thin skin, pigment, and the puffiness and shadows that come with poor sleep. The sleep-related part improves when sleep improves. Genetic or pigment-based circles do not disappear with any cream.
A caffeine eye serum can reduce puffiness a little, temporarily. A cold spoon or a cloth soaked in cold water on the eyes for 2 to 3 minutes also helps with swelling. Read more in our dark circles guide.
Sleep, water and caffeine
- Keep sleep times steady: even on days off, sleep at roughly the same time. Flipping day and night every week tires the body and the skin more.
- Dark, cool room: thick curtains, an eye mask, a fan. If load-shedding wakes you in the daytime heat, wipe your face and neck with a damp cloth.
- Caffeine early in the shift: cutting tea and coffee in the last few hours of the shift makes it easier to sleep when you get home.
- Water: you feel less thirsty in AC, but the body still loses water. Keep the bottle in sight.
- Night snacks: instead of fried food and sugary drinks every night, sometimes choose fruit or nuts. The link between food and acne differs between people, so watch your own skin.
Common mistakes
- Sleeping without washing after the shift. The night’s oil and grime go onto the pillow and into pores.
- Dropping sunscreen entirely because you work nights, even though you ride home in morning sun daily.
- Switching products constantly because skin looks tired. Dullness here is a sleep problem, not a product problem.
- Nurses and hospital staff forgetting their hands. Frequent washing and sanitiser crack the skin. After the shift, use a rich cream such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream on your hands.
For dryness in air-conditioned rooms, read why AC dries out your skin.
When to see a doctor
- If you cannot sleep for long periods, or have constant headaches or exhaustion, see a doctor. This is not only a skin issue.
- Sudden heavy breakouts, large painful spots, cracked and bleeding hands, itching or an eczema-like rash need a dermatologist.
- Under-eye swelling that appears suddenly and does not settle after sleep should also be checked by a doctor.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best skincare routine for night shift workers?
The best night-shift routine is two short steps timed to your sleep. Before your shift, rinse and apply a light moisturiser, plus sunscreen if you go out in daylight. After your shift, cleanse gently and moisturise before sleeping. A steady sleep time and a dark room matter more for your skin than adding extra products.
Do I need sunscreen if I work at night?
You need sunscreen whenever you are outside in daylight, including the commute home after a night shift. Morning sun in Dhaka becomes strong soon after 8 am, and a bus window seat counts. If you stay indoors all night and sleep through the day, you do not need sunscreen for screens.
Can an eye cream fix dark circles from night shifts?
No eye cream fully fixes dark circles. A caffeine serum may reduce puffiness a little for a while, and cold compresses help swelling. Circles from genetics or pigment stay regardless. The sleep-related part improves most when you protect a regular, dark, quiet sleep block every day.
