Quick answer
AC air holds little moisture, so water evaporates from your skin faster and it feels tight. The fix is a gentle cleanser, a hydrating layer such as hyaluronic acid on damp skin, a moisturizer on top to seal it in, and a lip balm.

AC dries your skin because, as it cools the air, it also pulls moisture out of it. Dry air draws water out of your skin. The fix has three steps:
- A gentle face wash: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, which does not leave skin tight after washing.
- A hydrating layer on damp skin: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5.
- Moisturizer on top: for dry skin, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream; for oily skin, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel.
Plus a lip balm at your desk, such as Vaseline Lip Therapy.
Why AC dries skin
Outdoors in Bangladesh the air is humid, so skin does not lose water easily. When the AC runs, the room cools and its water vapour condenses on the coil and drains away, leaving the air dry. Dry air draws water out of the top layer of your skin. After eight or nine hours in that room, cheeks feel tight, the sides of the nose flake and lips crack by the afternoon.
There is one more factor: arriving sweaty from the hot street into the AC in the morning, then stepping from AC into the heat in the evening. These sudden temperature swings add redness and discomfort for many people.
Dry or dehydrated? The difference matters
- Dry skin: low in oil. Tight and rough all year. It needs a richer moisturizer.
- Dehydrated skin: may have plenty of oil, and even oily skin can be dehydrated, but it is low in water. Oily yet tight, with sunscreen or makeup looking patchy. This is what AC causes most.
Many men with oily skin say their face is greasy but still feels tight. That is dehydration. The answer is not a heavy cream but a light hydrating layer and a gel moisturizer. More in dehydrated or dry skin.

Exactly how to use the routine
Morning
- Gentle face wash with lukewarm or normal water. Very hot water strips the skin’s oils.
- While your face is still slightly damp, 2 to 3 drops of hyaluronic acid serum, or pat on toner from your palm.
- Moisturizer straight away, to hold that water in. Hyaluronic acid alone in a dry AC room can leave skin tighter; the moisturizer on top is what makes it work.
- Sunscreen, because you get sun on the commute and through windows.
Midday at the office
If your cheeks feel very tight, wash your hands, take half a pea-sized amount of moisturizer and press it onto your cheeks. Do not rub over your sunscreen. Apply lip balm.
Night
Wash, then the hydrating layer and moisturizer again. For dry skin, use a slightly richer cream at night. For cracked lips, a lip sleeping mask overnight. More on lips in how to fix chapped lips.
Face mist: the reality
Many people spray water or mist on their face again and again in AC rooms. Plain water feels cool for a few minutes, but as it evaporates it takes some of the skin’s own water with it, so skin can feel drier afterwards. If you use a mist, follow it with a little moisturizer. Otherwise, a thin layer of moisturizer at midday does more than any mist.
Drinking water: how much it helps
Drinking enough water matters for your body, and living on tea and coffee all day with little water leaves you tired and headachy. But if you already drink enough, drinking more will not by itself fix a dry face. Holding water in the top layer of skin is the moisturizer’s job. So do both: keep a bottle on your desk, and moisturize your skin.
Eyes and lips
- Lips: lips have no oil glands, so they crack earliest in AC. Stop licking your lips; saliva evaporates and dries them further. Apply balm several times a day.
- Eyes: AC air and staring at a screen can leave eyes dry and stinging. Look into the distance now and then and blink deliberately. Keep face creams away from the eye area. If your eyes turn red, painful or your vision blurs, see an eye doctor.
Oily skin that still feels tight in AC
People with oily skin who sit in AC often make two mistakes: washing more often with a harsh face wash when skin feels tight, or skipping moisturizer for fear of more oil. Both increase dehydration. Instead, wash twice a day with a gentle cleanser, use a hyaluronic acid serum and a gel moisturizer such as Hydro Boost. Once the tightness eases, midday oil often calms down a little too.
The Bangladeshi office
After a day in AC, stepping out into the afternoon heat makes skin sweat and shine again, so many people decide they do not need moisturizer. But most of the day is spent in the AC. In the winter months the outside air is dry as well, and combined with AC the problem gets worse; switch to a slightly richer moisturizer then. Hard water at home can make skin feel even tighter after washing. For the whole office-day routine, see the office worker skincare routine.
Mistakes to avoid
- Washing your face with very hot water.
- Using hyaluronic acid and skipping moisturizer.
- Trying to scrub away flaky patches.
- Sitting where the AC blows straight onto your face; turn the vent away if you can.
When to see a doctor
- Red, itchy, scaly patches that persist despite regular moisturizer, which may be eczema or another skin condition.
- Cracks at the corners of the mouth that do not heal.
- Ongoing eye stinging, redness or problems with vision.
See a dermatologist or eye specialist in these cases.

Frequently asked questions
Why does air conditioning dry out my skin?
As AC cools a room it also removes water vapour, leaving the air dry. Dry air pulls water from the top layer of skin, so after several hours your cheeks feel tight and lips crack. A gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum on damp skin and a moisturizer on top help hold that water in.
Can oily skin be dehydrated in an AC office?
Yes. Dehydrated skin can still produce plenty of oil but lacks water, so it feels greasy and tight at once. Avoid harsh, frequent washing and do not skip moisturizer. Use a gentle cleanser, a hyaluronic acid serum and a light gel moisturizer such as Neutrogena Hydro Boost.
Do face mists help with AC dryness?
Plain water mists feel cooling briefly, but as the water evaporates it can draw out some of the skin’s own water and leave it drier. If you use a mist, follow it with a little moisturizer. Otherwise, pressing a thin layer of moisturizer onto your cheeks at midday works better.
