Quick answer
Wash and condition the night before, not the morning of. Tame frizz with a few drops of serum on the lengths only. Oil your hair after the festival, not before a styled day. Wash out hair spray and pandal dust the same night.

- Night before a styled day: shampoo and condition. Clean hair holds a style better, and it has dried fully by morning.
- The morning of: a few drops of anti-frizz serum on the lengths only, never the scalp. October humidity is what turns a blow-dry into frizz by noon.
- That night: wash out hair spray, sweat and pandal dust. Do not sleep in it for four nights running.
- After Dashami: oil and a hair mask to repair the week.
Why hair suffers so much in Puja week
Five festival days put your hair through more than a normal month: a straightener or curler every day, hair spray, tight buns and clips, road dust on rickshaw and bike rides, sweat in the crowds, dhunuchi smoke and, at the end, sindoor on Dashami. Add October’s humid air, which pushes water into the hair shaft and causes frizz. So the plan is simple: style on clean hair, wash at night, rest in the middle, repair at the end.
A five-day hair plan
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Night before Shashthi | Shampoo, conditioner, sleep with hair fully dry |
| Each styled morning | Style at moderate heat on dry hair, 2–3 drops of serum on the lengths |
| Each styled night | Shampoo if there was a lot of spray and dust; conditioner on the lengths at least |
| One day mid-festival | A no-heat day: a braid or a loose bun |
| Dashami night | Remove sindoor, shampoo twice, condition |
| The week after | Hair mask, a little oil on the lengths, no heat |

We do not currently stock a dedicated heat-protectant spray. If you straighten or curl daily through Puja, keep the tool at a moderate setting, never use it on damp hair, and give your hair one day off in the middle.
How to use them
- Shampoo on the scalp only. Rub a coin-sized amount into the scalp with your fingertips, not your nails. The lather that runs down as you rinse is enough to clean the lengths.
- Conditioner on the lengths only. From below the ears to the ends, two or three minutes, then rinse. On the scalp it makes hair limp.
- Start small with serum. Rub two or three drops between your palms and smooth them from mid-length to ends. Too much looks greasy and catches dust.
- Hair must be completely dry before heat. Press water out with a towel instead of rubbing. A hot iron on damp hair turns the water inside the strand to steam.
By hair type
- Oily scalp: shampooing every styled night is fine. Serum goes only on the very ends.
- Dry or curly hair: instead of shampooing every night, you can rinse with conditioner only and shampoo two or three times in the week. If frizz is heavy, apply serum to damp hair.
- Men with short hair: pandal dust and sweat make the scalp itch. A gentle shampoo each night and sleeping with dry hair is all you need.
The Bangladesh Puja: humidity, dust and smoke
A full day in the Dhaka or Chattogram crowds leaves road dust, exhaust and the smell of dhunuchi smoke in your hair. Loose hair on a rickshaw or bike tangles in the wind and the ends snap; keep it in a loose braid or bun for the ride and open it at the pandal. Do not cover damp hair under a hijab or orna; let it dry fully first. And if load-shedding knocks out the dryer, that is one more reason to wash the night before.
Four mistakes that show by Dashami
- Oiling the morning of a styled day. Oil makes hair limp and collects pandal dust. Oil after the festival, or the night before a no-style day.
- Heat on damp hair. Water under a hot iron turns to steam inside the strand. Always dry fully first.
- Sleeping in hair spray four nights running. It builds up, and brushing it out dry snaps hair. Rinse it out.
- Tight buns and clips every day. Pulling on the same spot for five days causes breakage along the hairline. Change the style.
Sindoor on the parting
On Dashami, rub a little coconut oil into the parting and leave it for 10 minutes before shampooing twice, then condition the lengths. Do not scrub hard; the colour does not come off faster, the scalp just gets irritated. The full method is in after sindoor khela: skin and hair.
The week after Dashami: repair
- On the first night, shampoo thoroughly to lift all the spray and dust.
- A hair mask once that week, a few minutes on the lengths.
- On a no-style evening, a little oil on the lengths, shampooed out the next day.
- No straightener or curler for at least a few days.
- Split ends cannot be repaired; if there are a lot, trim a little off.
When to see a doctor
- A red, itchy, swollen rash or blisters on the scalp after sindoor or colour, which can be an allergy.
- Painful bumps, pus or yellow crusts on the scalp.
- Hair coming out in clumps or bald patches appearing. None of this is a job for shampoo or serum; see a dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions
How do I protect my hair from heat styling during Puja?
Keep the straightener or curler at a moderate setting, never use it on damp hair, and give your hair one day off in the middle of the festival. Water under a hot iron turns to steam inside the strand and damages it, so always dry your hair fully before any heat styling, especially if you style daily.
Is it bad to sleep with hair spray in my hair?
Yes, sleeping in hair spray night after night causes build-up, and brushing it out dry can snap hair. Wash out hair spray, sweat and pandal dust each night rather than leaving it in for four nights running. A gentle shampoo such as Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo, followed by conditioner on the lengths, works well.
Can tight buns and clips damage hair during Puja?
Yes, wearing tight buns and clips every day pulls on the same spot and can cause breakage along the hairline over five festival days. Change your hairstyle through the week so the tension moves around. Pair this with washing out styling products at night and avoiding heat on damp hair to keep hair healthier by Dashami.
How do I remove sindoor from my hair parting?
On Dashami, rub a little coconut oil into the parting and leave it for about 10 minutes to loosen the colour. Then shampoo twice and finish with conditioner on the lengths. Ribana Organic Coconut Oil is one option in current stock. Avoid scrubbing the scalp hard, since that irritates the skin without lifting the colour faster.
