Most men’s winter skin problems come down to three habits: a harsh face wash or body soap, hot water, and no moisturizer after shaving. Four products fix most of it: a gentle face wash, a moisturizer, an SPF 50 sunscreen, and a lip balm. For normal or oily skin, that means COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser and Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel; for dry skin, CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser and CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. Moisturize straight after shaving, while the skin is still damp.
Why men’s skin suffers more in winter
Men’s skin is usually a little thicker and oilier, so it is easy to believe it "needs nothing" all year. In winter, three things happen at once: the air dries out and pulls water from the skin, hot baths and hot face-washing increase, and regular shaving scrapes off a little of the top layer every time. The result is tight cheeks, stinging after a shave, flakes under the beard, chapped lips and rough backs of the hands.

A two-minute morning and night
- Morning: face wash at the sink with lukewarm water (a pea-sized amount), pat dry, moisturizer, then sunscreen: two finger-lengths for face, neck and ears. SPF lip balm on the lips.
- Shaving days: shave after the shower, moisturizer straight after, then sunscreen.
- Night: face wash, moisturizer, a thick layer of lip balm. A little of whatever body lotion is at home on the backs of your hands.
Shaving in winter
- Shave after a shower, when hair is soft, or soak the beard area with warm water for a minute.
- Use shaving cream or gel, never dry or with soap. Soap dries winter skin further.
- Rinse with lukewarm water, then moisturize immediately. A plain, fragrance-free moisturizer such as Cetaphil Moisturising Cream soothes better than an alcohol aftershave, which stings and dries.
- Replace blunt blades. Most irritation and bumps come from a dull blade dragging on dry skin.
- Shave with the grain, and do not go over the same spot again and again. If you do not need a clean shave, shave every other day; in winter that alone cuts irritation a lot.
For bumps and burn: razor burn and bumps after shaving.
The beard in winter
The skin under a beard gets dry and flaky too, and that is the usual winter "beard dandruff". Wash the beard with your face wash, not a strong shampoo, and rub a little moisturizer or a few drops of oil into the skin underneath. Let the beard dry before combing, and do not pick at the flakes.
Chapped lips
Lip balm is the product men skip most in winter, yet lips have no oil glands and crack first. SPF lip balm by day, a thick layer at night. Do not lick your lips or peel the flakes. The full lip routine: how to fix chapped lips.
Hands, elbows and heels
Bike handles, office paperwork and frequent hand-washing with soap mean that the backs of men’s hands and the knuckles crack first in winter. After washing and drying your hands, rub in a little body lotion or moisturizing cream straight away, and again before bed. For cracked heels, apply a thick layer of cream after the bath and at night, and sleep in socks. Deep cracks that bleed need a doctor.
The Bangladeshi winter: bikes, fog and dust
- Commuting by bike puts cold morning wind straight on your face. Moisturizer and sunscreen before you leave add a little protection, and keep the helmet visor down.
- Winter sun feels gentle, but if you work in the midday sun or play outdoors, do not skip sunscreen.
- Dust is heavier in winter; do not go to bed without washing your face.
Three winter mistakes men make
- Washing the face under a hot shower. Wash it at the sink with lukewarm water.
- Using body soap on the face. It is made for thicker skin and strips the face.
- Licking chapped lips. Saliva evaporates and dries lips further. Use balm instead.
When to see a doctor
- Red, itchy patches under the beard that do not settle within two weeks of face wash and moisturizer.
- Razor bumps with pus or pain, or boils that keep returning in the same place.
- Cracks at the corners of the mouth that will not heal, or swollen lips.

Frequently asked questions
Which four skincare products do men need in winter?
Most men get through winter with a gentle face wash, a moisturizer, an SPF 50 sunscreen and a lip balm. For normal or oily skin that could be COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel and Biore UV Aqua Rich. Dry skin suits CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream and Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Gel.
Should men use aftershave in winter?
A plain, fragrance-free moisturizer is a better choice than an alcohol aftershave in winter. Alcohol stings and dries skin that is already losing water to the cold air. Rinse with lukewarm water after shaving, then apply something like Cetaphil Moisturising Cream straight away while the skin is still damp. It soothes rather than stripping.
How can men avoid razor irritation in winter?
Shave after a shower when hair is soft, or soak the beard area with warm water for a minute first. Always use shaving cream or gel, never shave dry or with soap. Replace blunt blades, because most irritation and bumps come from a dull blade dragging across dry skin. Moisturize immediately afterwards.
Can men use body soap on their face in winter?
It is better not to. Body soap is made for thicker skin and strips the face, which leaves it tight and flaky in dry winter air. Use a gentle face wash at the sink with lukewarm water instead of washing your face under a hot shower, and use a lip balm rather than licking chapped lips.
