The front of a product is marketing. The back — the ingredient list — is the truth. It’s written in a standard format called INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients), and once you can read it, you can judge any product yourself. (See the glossary for term definitions.)
The 5 rules of reading INCI
1. Order = concentration (mostly). Ingredients are listed high-to-low. The first 5 make up the bulk of the formula; anything after “fragrance/parfum” is usually present in tiny amounts.
2. Find the actives. Look for the ingredient you bought it for — niacinamide, salicylic acid, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), sodium hyaluronate. If it’s near the bottom, there may be very little of it.
3. Names aren’t scary. “Sodium hyaluronate” = hyaluronic acid; “Tocopherol” = vitamin E; “Snail secretion filtrate” = snail mucin; “Centella asiatica extract” = cica.
4. Watch your triggers. Fragrance/parfum, high alcohol (“alcohol denat.”) or essential oils can irritate sensitive or barrier-damaged skin. (See sensitive-skin routine.)
5. Check the symbols. The little open-jar “12M/6M” mark = months usable after opening; find the batch code/expiry too (how to verify it).
Why this also protects you from fakes
A genuine product has a clean, correctly-spelled, properly-formatted INCI list. Counterfeits often have misspellings, missing lists, or ingredients that don’t match the brand’s real formula — a quick authenticity tell. (See how to identify fakes.)
Skip the guesswork

Before you buy: check authenticity, not price
Don’t chase the cheapest product — look for the authentic one. A cheap fake can damage your skin, and using nothing at all does less harm than using a counterfeit. But a high price doesn’t guarantee authenticity either — people overpay for fakes too. So judge by authenticity, not price.
TheSkinProof offers free authenticity verification. Message our Facebook page with the product and we’ll analyze it and tell you whether it’s real or fake — so it’s important to verify before you buy anything. Or simply buy from TheSkinProof, where every product is already invoice-verified with a 2× money-back guarantee.
