Quick answer
"Baby" on the front is marketing. The ingredient list is the only part that tells you whether it suits a baby’s barrier.

1. Fragrance-free on the ingredient list
Not "unscented" on the front. Check for parfum, fragrance, linalool, limonene.
2. A short list
Fewer ingredients means fewer things that can react. "Bland and simple" is the paediatric standard.
3. Humectant plus occlusive
Glycerin to draw water in, and petrolatum, dimethicone or shea to hold it. Both halves, same as adult skin.
4. Cream or ointment over lotion for dry patches
Higher oil content holds water better. Lotion is fine for everyday, not for cracked skin.
5. Ceramides or oat if the skin is reactive
Both are well tolerated and support the barrier the baby is still building.
What to ignore
"Hypoallergenic" and "dermatologist tested" have no standard definition. "Organic" says nothing about irritation — plenty of plant extracts are sensitisers.
Timing matters as much as the product
Apply within a few minutes of the bath, on damp skin. A mid-range cream used this way outperforms an expensive one applied to dry skin an hour later.
