Quick answer
Newborn skin is thinner than an adult’s and takes about two years to mature. The whole rule is "less is more" — here is what that looks like in practice.

A newborn's skin is thinner than an adult's and produces fewer lipids, and that barrier keeps maturing for roughly two years. During that window it absorbs more and reacts faster — which is why the paediatric rule is "bland and simple", not "gentle version of an adult routine".
1. Bathing: short, warm, not hot
A few minutes is enough. Long hot baths strip the little barrier there is.
2. Cleanser: only where it is needed
Plain water is fine for most of a young baby. Use a mild, fragrance-free wash for the nappy area and visibly dirty skin.
3. Moisturize right after the bath
Within a few minutes, on damp skin. A plain fragrance-free cream does more than any specialised product.
4. Fragrance-free, not "baby-scented"
That smell is added fragrance, and fragrance is a leading irritant on immature skin.
5. Nothing active, ever
No acids, no retinol, no brightening, no scrubs. Not diluted, not "just a little".
When it is a doctor, not a product
Weeping or crusted patches, a rash that spreads or does not settle in a few days, fever alongside a rash, or anything on a newborn under a month. Persistent problems need a paediatrician — not a new product every week.
