Quick answer
Hair oil is a ৳-billion habit here, but only some of the claims hold up. Coconut oil has the strongest evidence, and it is not for the reason most people think.

Oil does not "feed" the hair — hair above the scalp is not living tissue. What a good oil does is reduce protein loss during washing and reduce friction, which means less breakage.
1. Coconut oil — the best-evidenced
It penetrates the hair shaft rather than just coating it, and is the most studied for reducing protein loss. Used before washing, it is the highest-return choice for most hair here.
2. Mineral oil and silicone-based serums — coating, not penetrating
They smooth and protect the surface well. Good for frizz and detangling; they do not reduce protein loss the same way.
3. Argan, almond, olive — comfort and shine
Pleasant and softening, with far less evidence for structural benefit. Choose on feel and budget, not on claims.
4. Amla, bhringraj and herbal oils — traditional, thin evidence
Widely used and generally harmless on lengths. Treat the hair-growth claims with scepticism; no topical oil regrows hair.
5. Avoid heavy oils on the scalp if you get flaking
Many plant oils feed *Malassezia*, the yeast behind dandruff and fungal acne.
How to actually use it
Before washing, on lengths and ends, one to two hours. Not overnight on the scalp, not daily, and always washed out properly.
What no oil will do
Regrow hair, reverse genetic thinning, or fix hair fall that starts at the root. Those need a diagnosis, not a bottle.
