Quick answer
For office workers: a 5-minute morning of face wash, moisturizer and SPF 50; a lip balm and sun stick in the desk drawer; reapply before going out at lunch; and a wash plus moisturizer at night. If you sit by a window, you still need sunscreen.

For a 9-to-5 office job, the routine has four parts:
- Morning, before you leave (5 minutes): face wash, light moisturizer, SPF 50 sunscreen. For example Simple Refreshing Facial Wash Gel, Simple Hydrating Light Moisturiser and Deconstruct Gel Sunscreen SPF 55+.
- At your desk: a lip balm and a Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick.
- Midday: reapply sunscreen if you go out for lunch or work.
- Night: wash, then moisturizer; a serum if you like.
Three skin problems office workers face
It is a mistake to think that office work means no sun and so no skincare. Three things do quiet damage:
- The commute: bus, rickshaw, CNG, or walking to the metro station adds up to an hour or more of sun and dust a day.
- Air conditioning: a day in dry AC air leaves skin tight and lips cracked. There is a separate guide on why AC dries your skin.
- Sun through the window: ordinary glass blocks much of UVB but lets a good share of UVA through. UVA darkens pigmentation and ages skin. If you sit by a window, you need sunscreen.
On top of that come work stress, late nights and not drinking enough water.

Small changes by skin type
- Oily skin: gel face wash and gel sunscreen. If your forehead and nose shine by lunch, blot with a tissue; there is no need to wash again. A gel sunscreen is often enough without a separate moisturizer.
- Dry skin: a creamy, low-foam cleanser such as CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, and never skip moisturizer. In an AC office you can add a thin layer of moisturizer again at midday.
- Combination skin: less moisturizer on the forehead and nose, a little more on the cheeks.
- Sensitive skin: choose fragrance-free products and patch-test anything new along the jawline for two days before using it on your whole face.
The 5-minute morning, before the commute
- Wash (1 minute): a pea-sized amount of face wash for 30 seconds, rinse and pat dry.
- Moisturizer (30 seconds): a pea-sized amount on face and neck.
- Sunscreen (1 minute): a two-finger line over face, ears and neck. Let it settle while you brush your teeth or get dressed.
- Lip balm.
If you shave, moisturize after shaving and then apply sunscreen. If you are really short of time, skip the face wash and just rinse with water, but never skip the sunscreen. For an even shorter version, see 5-minute skincare for busy people.
What to keep in mind on the commute
- Bus or rickshaw: by the window, one side of your face gets more sun. Do not keep rubbing your face with a handkerchief; blot the sweat.
- CNG: dust and exhaust come straight in through the open sides. Rinse your face with water when you reach the office.
- Metro: comfortable inside, but the walk to the station and the stairs are in the sun. Count those 10 to 15 minutes too.
- Masks: block dust but trap sweat. Take it off at the office and let your face dry.
The desk kit
Keep in the drawer: a lip balm, a sun stick or small sunscreen tube, some tissues and a water bottle. Do not wash your face with the office hand soap; it can be too harsh for facial skin. If your face gets oily, blot with a tissue, and if you come in from the heat, just rinse with water.
Reapplying sunscreen at midday
If you stay indoors all day away from windows, the morning sunscreen is enough. But if you go out for lunch or a meeting, or head home in afternoon sun, reapply once before leaving. Swipe the sun stick several times over forehead, nose, cheeks and neck. More detail in how to reapply sunscreen at the office.
The evening and night routine
- Wash your face as soon as you get home to remove commute dust and the day’s sunscreen.
- Optionally, 2 to 3 drops of niacinamide serum for oil and marks.
- Moisturizer.
You do not need more than that. For more on evenings, read the night skincare routine.
Stress, sleep and screens
- Sleep: regularly sleeping too little shows as dark under-eyes and a dull look. No cream replaces sleep.
- Stress: many people break out more during stressful periods, and stress also increases face-touching and picking. Keep your hands away from your face.
- Water and food: drinking tea and coffee all day and little water leaves you tired. A bottle on the desk makes it easier.
- Screens: evidence on how much laptop or phone light harms skin is still limited. The real damage comes from window and commute sun, so focus there.
On your weekend
There is no need to test new strong products or home-made packs at the weekend. Keep the same routine, and remember sunscreen if you head out into the sun for errands or to meet friends. It is also a good day to change your pillowcase, wash your cap or helmet liner, and check that the lip balm and sunscreen in your desk drawer are ready for the week.
Common mistakes
- Skipping sunscreen because you are indoors, while sitting by a window.
- Skipping the whole routine for lack of time, when three steps take five minutes.
- Buying many new products at once, then using none of them consistently.
- Falling asleep without washing your face because you are tired.
When to see a doctor
- Acne that is painful, large or leaving marks.
- Red, itchy, flaky patches on the face that do not improve with moisturizer.
- Sudden large brown patches on the cheeks.
See a dermatologist in these cases.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good skincare routine for office workers?
In the morning use a face wash, a light moisturizer and SPF 50 sunscreen, which takes about five minutes. Keep a lip balm and a sun stick at your desk and reapply before going out at lunch. At night, wash your face and moisturize, adding a niacinamide serum if you want.
Do I need sunscreen if I sit near an office window?
Yes. Ordinary window glass blocks much of UVB but lets a good share of UVA through, and UVA darkens pigmentation and ages skin. One morning application is usually enough if you stay indoors, with a reapplication before going out in the sun.
Does screen light from laptops damage skin?
The evidence is still limited. For office workers, the proven damage comes from sunlight through windows and during the commute, so daily sunscreen matters far more than worrying about screens. Focus on sunscreen, cleansing at night and moisturizing.
