Quick answer
For a baby with reactive skin the rule is not "gentler products" — it is fewer products, and a much lower threshold for asking a doctor.

A newborn's barrier is thinner, makes fewer lipids, and keeps maturing for about two years. When that skin is also reactive, there is very little margin — and a baby cannot tell you something stings. So the safe approach is fewer variables, not gentler versions of more products.
1. One new product at a time, with a week between
If everything changes at once and the skin reacts, you will never know which thing did it.
2. Fragrance-free, including the laundry
Detergent and fabric softener on clothes and bedding are the most commonly missed triggers.
3. Water-only bathing is often enough
Use a mild wash on the nappy area and visibly dirty skin. That is all.
4. Moisturize more often than feels necessary
Two to three times a day, always within minutes of a bath, on damp skin.
5. Plain beats specialised
A simple fragrance-free cream outperforms a product marketed for a specific baby concern.
Go to a doctor sooner than you would for an adult
Weeping, crusted or spreading patches; a rash with fever; anything on a baby under one month; or a reaction that does not settle within a couple of days. With sensitive baby skin, the right move is a paediatrician, not another product.
