Quick answer
A child aged 6–12 needs a mild fragrance-free wash or bar, a lotion after bathing, a gentle or mineral sunscreen for school and the playground, and a lip balm. Keep adult creams, fairness products and acids away, and see a doctor for itchy rashes or ring-shaped patches.

Four things are enough for a child aged 6 to 12:
- A mild, fragrance-free wash or bar: for example Cetaphil Baby Mild Bar, or Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser for the face.
- Lotion after bathing: for example Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion or Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion.
- Sunscreen for school and the playground: gentle or mineral-filter, such as Axis-Y Complete No-Stress Physical SPF50.
- Lip balm: for example Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter.
Keep adult creams, acids, retinol and fairness products out of reach. See a doctor for itchy dry patches, ring-shaped marks or a spreading rash.
From baby to school age: what changes
Most of what our baby skincare guide says still applies at this age: fewer products, gentler products. But after age 6, a few things change:
- More time outdoors. School fields, assembly, games at tiffin, cricket or cycling in the afternoon. More sun and more sweat.
- Skin is still thinner and more sensitive than an adult’s. Adult products are still not appropriate.
- Children start applying things themselves. Using a cream from mum’s dressing table or an older sister’s "glow" serum is very common at this age.
- At 10–12, puberty begins for some children, and oil on the nose and forehead or a spot or two may appear.
The daily routine
Bathing
- Lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water strips the skin’s oils and dries it out.
- There is no need to soap the whole body. A mild bar or body wash on the underarms, groin, feet and sweaty areas is enough. Cetaphil Baby Wash & Shampoo works for both body and hair.
- A 5–10 minute bath is enough; long soaks dry the skin.
- Pat dry with a towel; do not rub.
Lotion after bathing
Apply lotion all over within about 3 minutes of bathing, while the skin is still slightly damp. This locks water in. Use a little extra on hands, legs, elbows and knees. In winter or on very dry skin, use a thicker cream such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry to Very Dry Skin.
Face
Plain water in the morning is enough. Use a mild cleanser once, after coming home from play or at night, then a little lotion. At 10–12, if the nose and forehead get oily, you can move to a gentle face wash twice a day.
Sunscreen for school and the playground
Children spend more time outdoors than adults, and childhood sunburn is one of the causes of skin damage later in life. So after age 6, it is good to build a sunscreen habit on school days.
- Which sunscreen: SPF 30–50, low fragrance. On sensitive skin, mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) usually sting less. For example Axis-Y Complete No-Stress Physical SPF50 or CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 30.
- How much: a line the length of the child’s finger for face and neck, plus ears, back of the neck and any exposed arms.
- When: 15 minutes before leaving for school, and again if they will be in the sun for long at tiffin or in the afternoon.
- First time: patch-test behind the ear or on the inner arm for two days.
A hat, playing in the shade and avoiding the strongest sun between 11 am and 3 pm matter just as much. A comparison of sunscreens for children is in which sunscreen is best for kids.
Lips, hands and feet
- Lips: crack in winter and in the sun, more so with a lip-licking habit. A plain balm a few times a day, a little more at night.
- Hands: frequent handwashing and sanitiser at school dry and crack them. Lotion after coming home.
- Feet: barefoot play, sweaty socks and shoes can bring fungal infection between the toes. Change socks daily and dry feet before shoes go on.

Adult products to keep away from children
- Retinol, AHA/BHA, vitamin C serums and any anti-ageing product.
- Fairness or "brightening" creams, soaps and body lotions. No child needs a product aimed at skin colour.
- Shop-mixed creams and steroid creams. Never put a tube cream on itching or patches on your own; use only what a doctor prescribes, for as long as they say.
- Strongly scented body sprays, perfume and deodorant. These can irritate skin and cause allergies.
- Home remedies like lemon, toothpaste, kerosene or bleach.
- Nail polish remover and hair removal creams.
A detailed list of what not to use on children’s skin is in what not to put on baby skin. Keep creams and medicines on a high shelf, out of reach.
Children’s skin in Bangladesh weather
- Prickly heat in heat and humidity is very common. Loose cotton clothes, wiping sweat off and keeping the child somewhere cool work best. Do not pile thick creams or powder onto prickly heat.
- Fungal infections in the monsoon. Wet clothes and socks left on for long can cause round, itchy patches.
- Dryness in winter. Cheeks, hands and feet crack. Shorten baths and use more lotion.
- In hard-water areas, if skin feels very tight after bathing, apply lotion straight away.
When to see a doctor
See a paediatrician or dermatologist rather than treating these at home:
- Signs of eczema: dry, rough, very itchy patches in the elbow creases, behind the knees or on the neck that lotion does not fix or that keep coming back.
- Signs of fungal infection: round or ring-shaped red patches with a raised, itchy edge; round patches of hair loss on the scalp; white, soggy skin between the toes. Pale white patches on the face or body are covered in white or light patches on skin.
- Infection: pus, yellow crusts, pain, swelling, or a rash with fever.
- Sunburn that has blistered.
- Swelling, a spreading rash or stinging eyes after using a product.
Trying to manage eczema or fungal infections with home creams often makes them worse; steroid-containing mixed creams in particular can make a fungal infection spread.
Watch out for counterfeits
If the soap, lotion or sunscreen you buy for your child is fake, nobody knows what is inside it, and baby products are counterfeited too. At TheSkinProof every product is batch-checked against the importer invoice, you can verify products with the free product checker, and a product proven counterfeit is refunded at 2× the price.
In short: gentle baths, lotion after bathing, sunscreen on school days and adult products kept away. Skincare for children this age does not need to be more complicated than that.
Frequently asked questions
What skincare does a child aged 6 to 12 need?
A child aged 6 to 12 needs only a mild fragrance-free wash or bar, a lotion after bathing, a gentle or mineral SPF 30 to 50 sunscreen for school and outdoor play, and a lip balm. Adult serums, acids, retinol and fairness products are not appropriate and should be kept out of reach.
Should school children wear sunscreen in Bangladesh?
Yes, from about age 6, children benefit from sunscreen on school days and during outdoor play, because Bangladesh’s sun is strong and childhood sunburn contributes to skin damage later. Choose SPF 30 to 50 with low fragrance, mineral filters for sensitive skin, and patch-test the first time.
When should parents take a child to a doctor for skin problems?
See a paediatrician or dermatologist for itchy dry patches that keep returning, ring-shaped red patches, round patches of hair loss, pus or yellow crusts, blistered sunburn, or a spreading rash after a product. Do not treat these with shop-mixed or steroid creams, which can make fungal infections spread.
