Winter skincare during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be simple, fragrance-free and low on ingredients. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin on the face, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin on the belly, hips and thighs after the bath, a mineral sunscreen such as Axis-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen SPF50 by day, and Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter on the lips. Skip retinol, any retinoid and high-strength acids during this time. Check with your doctor before starting anything new. And if your palms or soles itch intensely in the last months, see a doctor promptly.
Winter and pregnancy: why skin dries out more
In pregnancy hormones shift, the body's blood and fluid balance changes, and the belly skin stretches a little more each month. Add the dry northern wind of December to February and hot baths, and the belly, breasts, thighs and lower legs turn tight, rough and itchy. While breastfeeding, short sleep, too little water and constant hand washing crack the hands and lips as well.

What to avoid
- Retinol, retinal, tretinoin or any retinoid. If a night cream label says "retinol", "retinal", "retinoid" or "retinyl", put it back. Even if a product carries a different label in our catalogue, do not use it in pregnancy if one of these words is in the ingredient list.
- High-strength acid peels. No strong glycolic, salicylic or mixed acid peels now. Ask your doctor even about a face wash with a little salicylic acid.
- Skin-lightening creams and kojic acid soaps. Patchy darkening on the face (melasma) is common in pregnancy and often fades after delivery. Sun protection is the main job for now.
- Steroid ointments bought on your own from a pharmacy. Not for itching without a doctor.
- Strong fragrance and essential oils. Your nose and your skin are both more sensitive now.
Some products in our catalogue carry a "pregnancy safe" marker, such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin and Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin. It is a guide to make choosing easier, not a substitute for your doctor's advice.
The winter routine: timing and amounts
Morning
- Rinse the face with lukewarm water. You can skip face wash in the morning.
- On slightly damp skin, one to two pea-sized amounts of Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin. If your skin is normal or combination, Cetaphil Moisturising Cream For Dry To Normal Sensitive Skin is a lighter option.
- Once the cream settles, two finger-lengths of a mineral (physical) sunscreen: Axis-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen SPF50. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin. Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF-50 is handy to keep in your bag.
- Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter on the lips.
Bath
- Keep the bath under 10 minutes in lukewarm water. Long, very hot baths in pregnancy can make you dizzy, and they dry the skin more.
- Use soap only where needed, something mild such as Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar.
- Pat dry and, within 3 minutes, apply Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin to the belly, around the breasts, waist, hips and thighs. Roughly a teaspoon for the belly, in gentle circles.
Night
- If you wore sunscreen, wipe it off with Simple Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water on cotton, then rinse with water.
- Cream on the face again, a little more generously.
- If the belly itches, another thin layer of cream. Keep nails short and do not scratch the skin raw.
- A thick layer of balm on the lips.
Itchy belly and stretch marks: the honest answer
Stretching belly skin itches; that is very normal. A regular moisturiser eases a lot of that itch and tightness. But honestly: there is no strong evidence that any cream or oil fully prevents stretch marks. Whether you get them depends largely on genes, how quickly weight is gained and your skin type. So do not feel guilty about skipping an expensive "stretch mark cream." A good fragrance-free cream twice a day gives you the comfort. For how marks fade after delivery, read stretch marks: why they happen and what helps.
Winter care while breastfeeding
- Dry or cracked nipples. To be upfront, we do not have a dedicated nipple cream on our shelf right now. Many doctors suggest a few drops of expressed breast milk after feeds, left to air-dry. Ask your doctor or a lactation adviser before applying any cream or ointment there, because whatever you apply can reach your baby's mouth. Do not use perfumed lotions, lip balms or body creams on the nipples.
- Cracked hands. Frequent hand washing and nappy changes crack the hands. A dedicated hand cream is not in stock right now; after each wash, a drop of your fragrance-free face cream does the job.
- Lips. You drink less water during night feeds. Keep a glass of water beside you while feeding.
- Face. Cream morning and night, sunscreen by day. Ask your doctor before starting retinoids or strong acids during breastfeeding too.
Common mistakes
- Rubbing lemon, raw turmeric or baking soda on the belly. They irritate and do not fade marks.
- Buying an oil labelled "natural" that is blended with essential oils.
- Starting several new products at once. One at a time, with a patch test on the inner arm first.
- Dropping sunscreen in winter. Melasma darkens with sun.
- Dismissing intense itching as "just dry skin."
The Bangladesh reality
In many homes elders suggest mustard oil in winter, or turmeric and gram flour to lift belly marks. Oil softens the skin, but mustard oil stings some people's skin; stop if it does. There is no need to scrub with turmeric or lemon. Trips to check-ups by rickshaw or CNG mean cold wind and dust on the face, so apply cream and sunscreen before you leave. If you run a room heater, do not sit too close, and keep a bucket of water in the room so the air dries out less. For the full winter day routine, read the 24-hour winter skincare routine. When to see a doctor
These are not ordinary dry skin. Tell your doctor or gynaecologist without delay if you notice:
- Intense itching late in pregnancy, especially on the palms and soles, worse at night. This can be a liver condition (obstetric cholestasis) that needs a blood test. See a doctor promptly.
- Itching together with yellow eyes or skin, dark urine or pale stools.
- Blisters or raised red rash starting around the belly button.
- Raised, itchy bumps spreading over the belly stretch marks that are ruining your sleep.
- Cracked, bleeding nipples or severe pain during feeds.
- Part of the breast red, hot, hard and painful, with fever or chills.
- Swelling or pus after applying any cream.

Frequently asked questions
What moisturiser is safe for winter dryness in pregnancy?
A plain fragrance-free cream such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin for the face, and Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin for the belly, hips and thighs within three minutes of the bath. Avoid night creams with retinol or any retinoid, and check with your doctor before starting anything new.
Can any cream prevent stretch marks?
There is no strong evidence that any cream or oil fully prevents stretch marks; genes and how fast weight is gained matter most. A fragrance-free moisturiser twice a day does ease the itch and tightness of stretching skin, so it is worth doing for comfort, without spending on special stretch mark products.
Which sunscreen is suitable in pregnancy?
Many doctors suggest a mineral (physical) sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, such as Axis-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen SPF50. Apply two finger-lengths after your morning cream, even in winter, because pregnancy melasma darkens with sun. Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Stick is handy for top-ups.
When is itching in pregnancy a reason to see a doctor quickly?
Intense itching late in pregnancy, especially on the palms and soles and worse at night, can signal obstetric cholestasis and needs a blood test, so see a doctor promptly. Also go quickly for yellow eyes, dark urine, blisters around the belly button or a spreading raised rash.
