What winter does to a groom's skin

Men's skin is already drier in winter, and shaving every day means a blade scraping off a little of the top layer each time. So stinging after shaving, red bumps (razor bumps), white dandruff-like flakes under the beard and cracked lips are all very common. On the wedding day, a stiff embroidered sherwani collar rubs the neck, the edge of the pagri presses the forehead, and the stage lights make you sweat. So a groom's preparation is not an expensive facial; it is fixing these small problems in advance.

There is a general groom plan in groom skincare before the wedding. This post is for a winter wedding, with more attention on shaving and dryness.

Your daily routine: when, how much, in what order

Morning

1. Wet your face with lukewarm water and wash for 30 seconds with a pea-sized amount of CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Normal to Dry, then rinse.
2. While the face is still slightly damp, one pump of Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion for Normal to Dry Sensitive Skin on the face, neck and the skin under the beard.
3. If you are going out, two finger-lengths of Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 50+. It is light and does not feel greasy.
4. Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++ on the lips.

Night

1. Wash your face with the same cleanser.
2. If you have razor bumps, on 2 or 3 nights a week swap the cleanser for COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser on the beard area only. Do not leave it on for more than a minute. Stop if it dries or stings.
3. Moisturiser. If the cheeks or neck are red, Purito Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream.

Shaving: when and how

The right way to shave

1. Shave after a bath, or two minutes after wetting your face with lukewarm water. It softens the beard.
2. Never on a dry face. Use shaving foam or gel; if you have none, cleanser lather works.
3. Shave in the direction the hair grows. Going against the grain feels smoother but causes more razor bumps.
4. Do not press, and do not stretch the skin. Rinse the blade after every stroke.
5. Finish with cool water, pat dry and moisturise straight away. Alcohol aftershave stings more in winter.
6. Change the blade after five to seven shaves. A blunt blade cuts more.

Shaving to the wedding timetable

• The night before the wedding: your last clean shave. Overnight, the redness has time to calm down.
• If your beard grows very fast, give one light pass on the wedding morning, at least 2 to 3 hours before the event, with the grain.
• No new razor, new trimmer or first-ever clean shave on the wedding day. Keep using whatever you have shaved with for the past two weeks.
• No parlour "face bleach" or strong pack on a shaving day.

Beard care

• If you keep a beard, wash the skin underneath it with cleanser every day, then rub moisturiser into the roots with your fingers. This reduces the white flakes and itching under the beard.
• A dedicated beard oil is not on our shelf right now. To keep beard hair soft, rub 2 or 3 drops of Ribana Organic Coconut Oil between your palms and apply only to the beard hair. If you are prone to acne, keep the oil off the skin.
• If you want a new shape or style, do one trial four weeks before, then the final shape two or three days before the wedding. Get your haircut five to seven days before, so it settles a little.

Razor bumps and red spots

When curly beard hair bends back into the skin, it makes red, itchy bumps. These are razor bumps.

• Shave with the grain, and do not go over the same spot again and again.
• If they are bad, keep short stubble with a trimmer instead of a clean shave.
• COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser 2 or 3 times a week, starting four weeks before the wedding. Do not start it fresh in the final week.
• Do not pick the bumps or open them with a needle. If a big pimple appears, put COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch 24 Ct on it overnight.

Lips, hands and the sherwani collar

• Lips: Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++ by day and Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter at night. Cracked lips are very visible in wedding photos. Do not lick them.
• Hands: Hands show in the ring and mehendi photos. Use CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin at night, and cut and clean your nails two or three days before. A dedicated hand cream is not on the shelf right now; this lotion is enough.
• Collar rub: A stiff sherwani collar leaves red marks on a freshly shaved neck. Shave your neck the night before, and half an hour before dressing, apply a thin layer of Purito Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream and let it dry. Ask your tailor for a soft cotton lining inside the collar.
• Pagri: Put a little moisturiser on the forehead where the edge presses.

The 4-week plan

4 weeks before

• Start the morning and night routine above. Patch test each new product under the jaw for two or three days.
• Trial any new beard or hair style.

3 weeks before

• Lips and hands every night.
• If you want a facial, have it this week, not later.
• Start aiming for 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night.

2 weeks before

• Freeze the routine. Nothing new.
• At the sherwani fitting, check how much the collar rubs your neck.

The final week

• Haircut 5 to 7 days before; beard shape and nails 2 to 3 days before.
• The night before the wedding: last shave, moisturiser, lip balm, early bed.

Wedding-day touch-ups

1. Morning: cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen if the event is in daytime.
2. If the makeup artist applies a light base, let the moisturiser settle for 15 minutes first.
3. In your pocket: lip balm, a handkerchief (to press off sweat, not rub) and a small comb.
4. If you sweat on stage, press with the handkerchief. Repeated powder shows flakes on dry skin.

Common mistakes

• A first-ever clean shave or a new razor on the wedding morning.
• Shaving against the grain and going over the same spot again and again.

• Washing with soap alone and skipping moisturiser.
• A fresh shave under a sherwani collar.
