Why winter mornings need a different routine
In summer the morning routine is about controlling oil and sweat. In winter it is the opposite: protecting skin from dry, cold air and dust. Skin loses the most water in the first few hours after you leave home, especially on a rickshaw or bike, by a bus window, or sitting in the sun on the roof. So in the morning, a little more cream, and sunscreen without fail.
Winter sun feels gentle, but the UVA rays that tan and age skin are there all year. The very first steps after waking (lip balm, water, washing) are covered in What to do for your skin first thing on a winter morning.
To wash or not
- Dry, sensitive skin: if you used a cleanser at night, lukewarm water is enough in the morning. If needed, a very gentle creamy cleanser such as CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Normal to Dry.
- Oily, acne-prone skin: a pea-sized amount of COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser for 30 seconds.
- Combination skin: cleanser on the T-zone only.
After washing, pat dry with a towel and leave your face slightly damp. That dampness helps the cream work properly.
The morning routine, step by step
- (Optional) hydrating serum or toner. Press 2–3 drops of The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 or a few drops of Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Toner into damp skin with your hands. You can skip it; but if you use it, always put cream on top, or the dry air will leave skin tighter.
- Moisturiser. One to one-and-a-half pea-sized amounts for face, neck and the area by the ears. For dry skin Cerave Moisturizing Cream For Normal To Dry Skin or, on a lower budget, Simple Kind To Skin Replenishing Rich Moisturiser; for oily skin iUNIK Beta-Glucan Daily Moisture Cream or Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Aqua Gel.
- Wait 2–3 minutes. Brush your teeth or get dressed meanwhile. Once the cream settles, sunscreen won't pill.
- Sunscreen. One line along the full length of your index and middle fingers, for face and neck. Spread over forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, the tops of your ears and your neck.
- SPF lip balm. Swipe The Derma Co 1% Ceramide Complex Lip Balm SPF30 PA++ over your lips twice. It protects against both sun and wind.
- Makeup base (if you wear it). Wait 5 minutes after sunscreen, then primer or foundation. In winter use less powder, only on the T-zone.
Morning combinations by skin type
If you have dry skin and want a moisturising sunscreen, Dot & Key Blueberry Hydrate Barrier Repair Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++ also works well because its texture is a little creamy. More options: Which sunscreen is good for dry skin.
Why the waiting times matter
- 2–3 minutes after cream: time for the cream to settle. Apply sunscreen straight away and the two mix and thin out, lowering protection.
- 5 minutes after sunscreen: if you wear makeup. Otherwise foundation drags the sunscreen away.
- 10–15 minutes before leaving: for chemical sunscreen to settle well. So apply it a little early, not standing at the door.
How much to use
- Cream: one to one-and-a-half pea-sized amounts. A little more on very dry cheeks.
- Sunscreen: a line two fingers long. Use less and you won't get the SPF on the label.
- Lip balm: two swipes.
- Hands: the backs of your hands get sun in winter too; rub leftover sunscreen or lotion into them after your face. We don't have a dedicated hand cream on our shelf right now; a body lotion or face cream works fine.
Going out at dawn in the fog, or on a bike
At first light, with no sun yet, protection from wind matters more than sunscreen: a little extra cream, a thick lip balm, and a scarf or mask. But if you'll be outside after 8 am, wear sunscreen. More: Protecting skin and lips in the early-morning fog. What to do at the office around midday is in When skin feels tight at the office in winter.
The most common mistakes
- Skipping sunscreen in winter.
- Going straight to sunscreen without cream, especially on dry skin.
- Too little sunscreen, only on the cheeks.
- Layering vitamin C, acids and retinol all together in the morning. In winter, fewer products is better.
- Heavy powder on dry skin.
- Forgetting ears, neck and the backs of the hands.
- "Moisturising" with nothing but a water spray.
The Bangladesh reality
On winter mornings in Dhaka the commute by bus, rickshaw or to the office brings a lot of dust and smoke. That dust irritates dry skin further. Many schools and offices start at 7 or 8 am, so keep the routine short: cream, sunscreen, lip balm, done in 5 minutes. For wedding invitations or trips to Sylhet, Sreemangal or Bandarban, carry sunscreen in your bag, because the sun is stronger in the hills. When to see a doctor
- Repeated stinging, red bumps or itching after applying sunscreen or cream.
- Rough red patches on your face that don't improve after 2 weeks of moisturiser.
- Your face turns red or blisters whenever you go in the sun.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before starting any new active product.
Why authentic products matter
A fake sunscreen won't give the protection printed on the label, and a fake cream can sting dry skin. TheSkinProof is an invoice-verified skincare marketplace. Frequently asked questions
In winter, does moisturiser or sunscreen go first?
Moisturiser first, then sunscreen. Apply a pea-sized amount of cream such as CeraVe Moisturizing Cream For Normal To Dry Skin to slightly damp skin, wait 2–3 minutes, then apply two finger-lengths of sunscreen. Sunscreen is always the last skincare step of the morning, just before makeup.
Which sunscreen is best for dry skin on winter mornings?
Dry skin is more comfortable with a moisturising texture, such as Skin Aqua Super Moisture Barrier UV Essence or Dot & Key Blueberry Hydrate Barrier Repair Sunscreen. Apply two finger-lengths 2–3 minutes after your cream and reapply every 2–3 hours outdoors. Don't use sunscreen instead of cream.
Does oily skin need moisturiser on winter mornings?
Yes. Oily skin gets dehydrated in winter too, and skipping cream can make it produce more oil. Use a pea-sized amount of a light gel-cream such as iUNIK Beta-Glucan Daily Moisture Cream or Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel, then a light sunscreen like Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide.
How long should I wait between steps in the morning?
Wait 2–3 minutes after cream before sunscreen so the layers don't mix and thin out. If you wear makeup, wait another 5 minutes after sunscreen. Apply sunscreen 10–15 minutes before you leave home rather than at the door. The whole routine still fits in about 5–10 minutes.
