What a foggy morning actually does to your skin
From December to February, especially in the north, Mymensingh and around Dhaka, mornings start with thick fog. Many people assume fog means moisture in the air, so the skin will not dry out. The opposite is true.
- Cold air pulls water out of the top layer of your skin. The stronger the wind, the more it pulls.
- The speed of a rickshaw or bike makes that air colder and harsher. That is why bikers' cheeks and lips crack first.
- Dust and smoke settle low with the fog. In cities, morning fog is mixed with dust and fumes, which sting dry skin.
- UV arrives once the sun is up, fog or not. Fog dims the light but does not block all of it.
- Lips have no oil glands. They are the first part of the body to dry and split.
The result: a red nose, tight cheeks, split lip corners and rough knuckles. The good news is that a five-minute routine before you leave prevents most of it.
The five-minute routine before you step out
Do it in this order. Each step takes under a minute.
- Wash (optional): if you cleansed properly last night, a splash of plain water is enough in the morning. Not hot water: lukewarm or room temperature.
- Cream: while your face is still slightly damp, apply a pea-sized amount of a rich cream. Do not skip the sides of your nose, around the lips and the earlobes. For very dry skin, Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin works even better.
- Sunscreen: will you be out after sunrise? Let the cream settle for 2–3 minutes, then apply two finger-lengths of sunscreen to face and neck. In winter, a moisturising formula is the better choice.
- Lip balm: after sunscreen, swipe an SPF lip balm over your lips two or three times.
- Hands: rub cream into the backs of your hands and knuckles. Then scarf, cap and socks.

Who goes out when: different situations
Morning walk or jog
Wind hits your face and you also sweat. Skip heavy, greasy layers and apply the cream thinly. If you walk after sunrise, add sunscreen. A thin cotton scarf or mask is best over your nose and mouth; wool rubbing directly on the face can itch.
Fajr prayer
At Fajr the sun is usually not up yet, so you do not need sunscreen. The problem is cold ablution water followed by cold air. After ablution, press your face and hands dry with a soft cloth instead of rubbing. Within one or two minutes, apply a very thin layer of cream. A thin layer absorbs into the skin; if you want certainty before the next ablution, ask your own religious scholar.
The school run
Between 7 and 8 am the sun is up. Cream and sunscreen on your own face, lip balm on your lips. For your child: a little fragrance-free moisturiser on the cheeks, lip balm, and a cap over the ears. See the separate guide, winter routine for children aged 5–12.
Rickshaw, CNG and bike
Wind at speed is the hardest. On a bike, wear a full-face helmet or visor, a cloth over nose and mouth, and gloves. On long trips, reapply sunscreen to nose and cheeks every 2–3 hours with Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick Mugwort + Camellia SPF50+ PA++++; your fingers stay clean. If you work outdoors all day, read skincare for bikers and outdoor workers.
Lips: always the first to crack
- SPF lip balm in the day: Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++ or The Derma Co 1% Ceramide Complex Lip Balm SPF30 PA++. The second has ceramides, which feel comfortable on very dry lips.
- Apply just before you leave, then put on your mask or scarf.
- Do not lick your lips. As saliva evaporates it takes the lips' own water with it.
- Do not peel the skin. Bleeding makes the cracks deeper.
- Thick layer at night: before bed, use something rich such as Laneige Lip sleeping mask.

Hands: ablution, water and cold wind
A dedicated hand cream is not on our shelf right now. Any rich moisturising cream does the same job on hands, though. For your pocket, the small tube of Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin is handy. After every handwash, pat dry and rub twice a pea-sized amount into the backs of the hands, the knuckles and around the nails. On a bike or in severe cold, wear gloves. Cracked hands and feet are covered in detail in cracked hands and feet in winter.
Scarf, mask and cap
- Cotton or soft fabric near the face. Wool rubbing on skin can cause itching and redness.
- A mask cuts dust and keeps a little warm air in front of your nose and mouth.
- Cover your ears. The tops of the ears get the reddest and driest in the cold.
- Change a damp mask. Once your breath soaks it, it makes you colder.
What to do when you get back
- Before you reach for hot tea, wash your face and hands in lukewarm water to remove dust.
- Pat dry with a towel.
- Apply a thin layer of moisturiser again.
- Lip balm again.
Do not use very hot water or sit with your face in front of a heater. Going suddenly from cold to heat makes the skin redder.
Mistakes almost everyone makes
- "It is foggy, so I do not need sunscreen." After sunrise you do.
- Splashing the face with water and leaving without cream. Cold wind on wet skin dries it fastest.
- Using only petroleum jelly or oil instead of sunscreen. Oil does not block UV.
- Licking lips and peeling skin.
- Dirty helmet padding. If it is never cleaned, it causes breakouts and irritation on the cheeks.
- Washing the face in hot water on return.
The Bangladesh reality
Going out in the morning here usually means a rickshaw, leguna or bike, dusty roads and sometimes knee-deep fog. Many people wake up and rush out with no time for skincare. So keep the rule short: one cream, one sunscreen, one lip balm, and a small tube in your pocket. Dhaka's dust has its own guide: skincare for Dhaka pollution and dust. You will find short answers to almost every winter question in our Winter FAQ Centre.

TheSkinProof is an invoice-verified skincare marketplace: the source invoice of every product is checked. If a product is proven counterfeit, you get 2× your money back; claims must be made within 7 days of delivery. Delivery across Bangladesh, cash on delivery available.
When to see a doctor
- Raised, itchy welts every time you go into the cold that do not settle within half an hour.
- Lip cracks that keep bleeding, or that do not heal after two weeks of regular lip balm.
- Fingers or ears turning white or bluish, or going numb.
- Red, scaly patches that spread or ooze, which can be a sign of eczema.

Frequently asked questions
What should I put on my face before a winter morning walk?
Ten minutes before your walk, apply a pea-sized amount of a rich moisturiser such as CeraVe Moisturizing Cream For Normal To Dry Skin. If you will be out after sunrise, add sunscreen on top, then an SPF lip balm. A light scarf over your nose and cheeks cuts the redness from cold wind.
Do I need sunscreen on a foggy morning?
Yes, if you are outside after sunrise, because fog does not block all UV. If you go out for Fajr before sunrise and are back before it rises, moisturiser and lip balm are enough. For a school or office commute after about 7 am, apply sunscreen.
Which lip balm is best for going out in the cold?
For daytime, choose a lip balm with SPF, such as Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++ or The Derma Co 1% Ceramide Complex Lip Balm SPF30. Apply two or three swipes before you leave and again every 2–3 hours. Stop licking and peeling your lips, as that is what deepens the cracks.
My face stings in the cold wind on my bike. What helps?
Apply a rich cream, then sunscreen, then wear a full-face helmet or visor and a cloth mask over your nose and mouth. Once the wind stops hitting your cheeks directly, the stinging drops a lot. On long rides, reapply sunscreen every 2–3 hours with Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick.
