Quick answer

Four things cover a whole family: one shared body lotion (Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Glow), one gentle face cream for the adults (Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturiser), a lip balm (Vaseline Lip Therapy), and, if there is a baby, the baby's own cream (Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft).

The short answer

You don't need ten separate products to get a whole family through winter. Four things do the job:

Add a small light cream, Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream, for a teenager or anyone with oily skin, and the set is complete. Below are two sets, one without a baby and one with, both close to this budget.

The full morning-to-night routine is in our 24-hour winter skincare routine. More winter shopping questions are answered in the buying section of our Winter FAQ Centre.

Why four things are enough

In winter the whole family has one main problem: dryness. Tight hands and legs, cracked heels, chapped lips, rough faces. What fixes that is a good moisturiser, at the right time, in the right amount. Separate serums, toners and masks are not essential for everyone in winter. On a tight budget, spend the money on what everyone will actually use every day.

Who uses what

Parents and adults

  • Face: two pea-sized amounts of Simple Kind To Skin Replenishing Rich Moisturiser morning and night, while the face is still slightly damp after washing.
  • Body: body lotion within three minutes of bathing, on hands, legs and back. About one teaspoon covers the whole body.
  • Heels: at night, a generous amount of body lotion and cotton socks. A dedicated foot cream is not on our shelf right now; in this set, the body lotion does that job.

Grandparents

Older skin dries out the most, especially the shins and the backs of the hands. Apply body lotion twice a day, after bathing and before sleep. The adults' face cream works for their faces too. If itching is strong, keep bath water lukewarm, not hot.

School-age children (3 to 12)

Body lotion on arms and legs after bathing, and a little on the face. Lip balm before school. If a child has eczema or very sensitive skin, a gentle lotion such as CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin is a better choice than a scented one. More detail for children is in which lotion or cream for children in winter.

Teenagers

On oily or acne-prone skin, a thick cream can feel heavy. For them, the light Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream, one pea-sized amount on the face, twice a day.

Babies

A baby's skin is thinner than an adult's, so keep a separate cream for the baby, never an adult's scented lotion. Apply a thin layer of Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft to cheeks, arms, legs and dry patches after bathing.

  • Babies under 6 months: only a plain, fragrance-free baby moisturiser, no essential oils, no adult products. Before buying, check the label for fragrance (fragrance or parfum), and talk to your baby's doctor.
  • An honest word on mustard oil: many families massage babies with mustard oil in winter. Research has found that for some babies mustard oil can irritate the skin and weaken the skin barrier. That is why many doctors suggest a plain fragrance-free baby moisturiser instead. Nothing to panic about; it is just good to know.
  • If you can stretch the budget a little, a large bottle of Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion is handy for the baby's whole body.

How long each one lasts

These are rough estimates, assuming regular daily use.

  • Body lotion, 200ml: one person using it on the whole body once a day gets about 5 to 6 weeks. A family of four sharing it on hands and legs gets about 2 to 3 weeks. This runs out first, so plan for a second bottle around mid-December.
  • Face cream, 125ml: two adults twice a day get about 6 to 8 weeks, which is most of the winter.
  • Lip balm, 20ml: about 2 to 3 months, even with the whole family using it.
  • Nivea Soft, 25ml: about 3 to 4 weeks on one person's face.
  • Sebamed Baby Cream, 50ml: about 4 to 6 weeks on the face and dry patches only; it goes faster on the whole body.

The family's daily routine

  1. Morning: after washing, adults use the face cream, teens the light cream. Everyone puts on lip balm. Adults staying out in the sun for long should use sunscreen.
  2. After bathing: body lotion within three minutes, while the skin is still a little damp. The baby gets their own cream.
  3. Before sleep: adults reapply face cream, put extra lotion on the heels, and a thick layer of balm on the lips.

Small tricks to save money

  • Apply on damp skin: the same amount of lotion spreads further and works better on damp skin.
  • Keep the pump or lid closed: hand a bottle to a child and half of it gets wasted; let a parent apply it.
  • Cut down on very hot baths: then less lotion does the job.
  • Take lip balm with a clean finger: anyone with a cold sore or a sore on the lip should use their own balm.

Common mistakes

  • Putting an adult's scented body lotion on a baby.
  • Using body lotion on the face. Many body lotions contain fragrance, which can sting the face.
  • Only applying at night. The lotion after bathing is the most important one.
  • Buying ten products and using none of them regularly.
  • Home remedies with lemon, toothpaste or baking soda. They irritate the skin and make dryness worse.

The Bangladesh reality

Most of our homes have one bathroom, one bottle of lotion, and everyone uses it. That is why "one lotion everyone can share" is the most realistic answer for us. In joint families, grandmothers' skin dries out most, school children chap their lips playing in the field, and in the December wedding season the adults worry about their faces. Many people buy loose or unbranded lotion from the market; fake products carry a risk of rashes, especially on a child's skin. Buying four right things at once and using them regularly gets the family comfortably through winter.

Why authentic products matter

What the whole family, especially babies and older people, puts on their skin every day needs to be genuine. TheSkinProof is an invoice-verified skincare marketplace: the source of every product is checked against invoices. If a product is proven counterfeit, you get 2× your money back; claims must be made within 7 days of delivery. We deliver across Bangladesh, with cash on delivery available.

When to see a doctor

  • Red, rough, itchy patches on a baby that don't improve with moisturiser, especially on the cheeks and in the folds of elbows and knees; this may be eczema.
  • Blisters, pus, yellow crusts, or a rash with fever on a baby.
  • Redness, swelling or a spreading rash after using any new product. Stop using it immediately.
  • Bleeding cracks or sores on an older person's feet, or any wound on the feet of someone with diabetes.
  • Severe itching that wakes someone at night despite two weeks of regular care.

Frequently asked questions

What should a family buy for winter skincare on a small budget?

Four things are enough: one shared body lotion such as Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Glow, one gentle face cream for adults such as Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturiser, a lip balm, and, if there is a baby, the baby's own cream. Add a small light cream for a teenager with oily skin.

How long does a 200ml body lotion last for a family?

Shared by a family of four on hands and legs, roughly 2 to 3 weeks; used by one person on the whole body once a day, about 5 to 6 weeks. The body lotion runs out first, so plan for a second bottle around mid-December.

Can a baby use the family's body lotion?

No. A baby's skin is thinner and adult lotions often contain fragrance. Use a baby product such as Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft. For babies under 6 months, use only a plain fragrance-free baby moisturiser with no essential oils, and check with the baby's doctor first.

Do children need a separate cream in winter?

Children over 3 can usually share the family body lotion after bathing, plus a lip balm before school. If a child has eczema or very sensitive skin, switch to a gentle lotion such as CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin, and see a doctor if red itchy patches don't settle.
