If you ride a bike, pull a rickshaw or work outdoors in winter, your face takes cold wind, damp fog, dust and midday sun all at once. So do three things every day: put on a moisturiser before you leave (for example Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream), sunscreen on top (for example Fix Derma Shadow SPF 50+ Cream PA+++), and keep an SPF lip balm in your pocket (Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++).
At night, use CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin on your hands and knuckles, and if they are cracking, a thin layer of Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume on top.
Wear a muffler or buff and gloves to block the wind. That alone settles most of the tightness, red stinging and cracked lips.
What winter outdoor work actually does to your skin
People who spend all day on the road put their skin under far more strain than people who sit indoors. Once you see the causes separately, the fix becomes simple.
Cold wind and windburn
At 40 to 50 km per hour on a bike, the wind on your face pulls water out of the top layer of skin very fast. The result is redness, stinging and tightness on the cheeks and beside the nose. This is called windburn. It is not a real burn, but it feels close to one. The fix is to keep a protective layer on the skin: moisturiser, with fabric over it.
Fog and dust
Morning fog wets your face, and then the wind dries that water off. This wet-dry cycle leaves skin even drier. With no rain in winter, there is also far more road dust and smoke. Dust mixes with sweat and settles in pores, so washing your face in the evening matters.
Winter midday sun
Many people think winter sun is gentle and sunscreen is not needed. But from 11 am to 3 pm there is still plenty of UV in winter, and people who are outside six to eight hours a day get more sun-darkened patches and early lines. Read more in skincare when you work outside all day.
Who this guide is for
- Bikers, delivery riders and ride-share drivers
- Rickshaw, van and CNG drivers
- Construction workers, brick-kiln workers and farm workers
- Traffic police, security guards, hawkers and field sales staff
Not everyone has the same budget, so every step below has a lower-cost option.
Your daily routine: when, how much, in what order
In the morning, before you leave
- Splash your face with plain water; no face wash needed. Pat dry with a soft towel, do not rub.
- While the face is still slightly damp, apply about two pea-sized amounts of Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream to the face, ears and neck.
- Two or three minutes later, sunscreen: about two finger-lengths of Fix Derma Shadow SPF 50+ Cream PA+++. If your skin is oily, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 50+ feels lighter.
- Finish with Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++ on the lips. It has SPF, so it is the right choice for daytime.
- A little moisturiser on the backs of your hands and the knuckles, then gloves.
During the day
- If you are in the sun at midday, press a tissue or handkerchief on your face to lift dust, then add a little more sunscreen.
- Reapply lip balm every two or three hours, or after eating and drinking.
- Drink water. You feel less thirsty in winter, but your body still loses water.
When you get home in the evening
- Wash your hands first, then wash your face once with lukewarm water and Simple Kind to Skin Moisturising Face Wash. Not hot water.
- If your sunscreen is thick or water-resistant, first wipe it off with Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water All In 1 For Sensitive Skin on a cotton pad, then use the face wash.
- Pat dry and moisturise straight away.
At night, before bed
- If your face is very dry or stinging, use a thicker cream at night, such as Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin.
- Use CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin on your hands and elbows. On cracked knuckles, add a pea-sized amount of Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume on top, then sleep in thin cotton socks over your hands if you like.
- On the lips at night, a thicker layer of Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter.
Helmet, muffler and gloves
- Ride with the visor down. A clear visor cuts the wind hitting your face and that cuts windburn a lot.
- Wipe the helmet's inner pads once a week, or take them out and wash them. Sweat and oil build up and cause acne on the forehead and cheeks.
- A cotton buff or muffler should cover the nose and mouth, but wash it daily or every other day. Dirty fabric rubbing on skin makes redness worse.
- A chin strap that is too tight rubs the skin raw under the chin. Put a little cream there.
- Gloves protect the knuckles that grip the handlebar. Rickshaw pullers can manage with fingerless gloves.
For helmet details, read face care when you ride a bike.
Cracked lips and knuckles
For people outdoors in winter, the worst pain is usually on the lips and knuckles. Lips have no oil glands, and the skin on knuckles folds again and again, so these crack first.
- Do not lick your lips. Saliva dries and cracks them further.
- Do not peel off lip skin; it can bleed and turn into a sore.
- SPF balm by day, thick balm at night. Follow this for two weeks and most people's lips settle. Read more in caring for cracked lips in winter.
- A dedicated hand cream is not on our shelf right now. Honestly, you do not need one: CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin or Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume works well on hands.
Construction and field work
Cement, sand and soil pull the oil out of the skin on your hands. Wet cement is alkaline; if it stays on the skin for long it can cause irritation and burn-like wounds.
- Wear rubber or cloth gloves at work, and long sleeves if possible.
- If cement gets on your skin, wash it off with clean water as soon as you can.
- After work, wash and dry your hands and apply lotion straight away.
- Farm workers should keep a gamchha or cap on the head and cover the face and neck at midday.
What to carry in your pocket
If you are out all day, a small pocket kit helps a lot:
- An SPF lip balm (Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++)
- A small cream (Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream fits easily in a pocket)
- A small tube of sunscreen
- A handkerchief or tissues, and a water bottle

Common mistakes
- Washing your face in very hot water after coming in from the cold. Hot water makes windburnt skin sting more. Use lukewarm water.
- Washing with soap several times a day. If dust gets on your face, use plain water. Soap once a day, in the evening.
- Putting on an alcohol aftershave and then getting on the bike. The wind makes your face burn. Shave at night if you can.
- Using only oil. Mustard oil or coconut oil does not hold water in well and it grabs dust. A cream or lotion is better.
- Skipping sunscreen in winter. Sun-darkened patches build up in winter too.
- Wearing a dirty muffler day after day.
The Bangladesh reality
Roads in Dhaka, Gazipur and Narayanganj are full of dust and smoke in winter. In the north, in Panchagarh, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur, early-morning temperatures drop a lot and fog can last until noon. Many riders leave at 6 am and come home at 10 pm. Doing a routine twice in such a long day is hard, so this guide treats morning and night as the two times that matter. During the day, only lips and sun.
For rickshaw pullers and day labourers, the lowest-cost fix is one small cream, one lip balm and a cotton gamchha over the face. That alone makes a big difference.

Frequently asked questions
Should bikers wear sunscreen in winter?
Yes. Even in winter there is plenty of UV from 11 am to 3 pm, and people on the road six to eight hours a day get more sun-darkened patches. After your morning moisturiser, apply about two finger-lengths of Fix Derma Shadow SPF 50+ Cream PA+++. If you are in the sun at midday, wipe your face and add a little more. Oily skin may prefer Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch.
My face stings and turns red after riding in the cold. What helps?
That is windburn: the cold wind strips water from your skin. Before you ride, apply Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream and sunscreen, keep the visor down and cover your nose and mouth with a buff. At home, wash with lukewarm water and use Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin at night. Stop scrubs and alcohol aftershave for a few days.
What should an outdoor worker carry in their pocket in winter?
Keep a small kit: an SPF lip balm such as Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++, a small cream such as Nivea Soft Light Moisturising Cream, a small tube of sunscreen, a handkerchief or tissues and a water bottle. Reapply lip balm every two or three hours and after meals, and refresh sunscreen once at midday after wiping dust off your face.
Which cream works on cracked knuckles if there is no hand cream?
Use CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin on clean, dry hands at night, then a pea-sized amount of Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume on the cracks. Thin cotton socks over the hands help it stay on. A dedicated hand cream is not on our shelf right now, but these two work well. See a doctor if cracks bleed a lot, swell or fill with pus.
