Quick answer
Dark, rough elbows and knees are mostly friction and dryness: use CeraVe Moisturising Cream after every bath, CeraVe SA Lotion a few nights a week, Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume on cracked heels at night, and reduce the rubbing.

In winter, elbows, knees and heels look dark and rough mainly for three reasons: friction and pressure (leaning on a desk, kneeling on the floor or in prayer, sandals rubbing the heel), dryness, and a thick build-up of dead skin. The fix has three parts too: reduce the friction, use a rich moisturiser every day after your bath, and use a gentle exfoliating lotion a few nights a week. We stock the salicylic acid lotion CeraVe SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin, Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin for daily use, and Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume for cracked heels at night. Roughness improves a lot in 4 to 6 weeks, and once friction drops the darkness fades slowly as well. There is no colour-change promise here: the goal is smooth, soft, healthy skin.
Why elbows and knees look darker and rougher in winter
The skin on elbows and knees is naturally a little thicker. It has fewer oil glands, so it gets less moisture on its own. In winter the air is dry, bath water is hot, and most of us put lotion only on the face and hands. So these spots dry out first.
Then comes friction and pressure. Leaning on a desk at the office or in class, resting elbows on your knees while on the phone, sitting on the floor to cook or cut vegetables, prostrating in prayer, kneeling to mop the floor. Repeated rubbing makes skin thicken to protect itself, and a bit more pigment collects there. This is called friction darkening. It is not dirt, so you cannot scrub it off.
Thick, dry dead skin does not reflect light well. That is why a dry elbow looks greyer and darker than it really is. Many people notice their skin tone looks more even right after moisturising. That is simply the texture becoming smoother.
Heels are a separate story. Sandals, walking barefoot, dust and the whole weight of your body land here. Thick dry skin cannot bend, so it cracks. For detailed heel care read our guide to dry hands, feet and cracked heels.
What to apply: three simple steps
1. Every day: a rich moisturiser
This is the main job. After your bath, while skin is still slightly damp, put a rich cream on elbows, knees and heels. Good options:
- Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin: contains ceramides, thick but not sticky.
- Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin: a big tub, handy for the whole family.
- For the rest of the body, if you want something lighter, CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin.
About twice a pea-sized amount per elbow or knee is enough. Massage it in with small circles.
2. Three to four nights a week: a gentle exfoliating lotion
CeraVe SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin contains salicylic acid. It loosens the bonds between dead skin cells, so the thick layer lifts slowly without scrubbing. It also has ceramides, so it does not dry you out. Apply a thin layer on elbows and knees at night. In the first week use it every other night; if your skin is comfortable, move to nightly.
Many people ask about lactic acid or urea lotions. They work in a similar way, but a dedicated urea cream or lactic acid body lotion is not on our shelf right now. That is why we suggest the salicylic acid lotion.
3. In the bath: a mild cleanser, plus an SA body wash if needed
Harsh alkaline soaps dry elbows and knees further. Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar is mild. If you also have small rough bumps on your upper arms or thighs, use Cerave SA Body Wash for Rough and Bumpy Skin a few days a week. Leave the lather on for 30 seconds, then rinse.
If your heels are cracked
We do not have a dedicated foot or heel cream right now. Honestly, a thick balm applied generously at night under socks fixes most cracked heels. Put Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume or Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin thickly on the heels, then cotton socks. Do not put acid lotion on open cracks.
Routine: when, how much, in what order
- Morning bath (lukewarm water, under 10 minutes): a mild bar or the SA body wash.
- Within 3 minutes of the bath: rich cream on elbows, knees and heels. For the after-bath method read the 3-minute after-bath rule.
- During the day: if you lean on a desk, put a folded cloth or soft pad under your elbows. If you sit on the floor, use a thin cushion or mat.
- At night (3 to 4 nights a week): a thin layer of SA lotion on clean, dry elbows and knees.
- Other nights: just the rich cream. Balm and socks on the heels.
To see where this fits into your whole day, read the 24-hour winter skincare routine.
Realistic timelines: when you will see results
- 3 to 7 days: roughness and the tight feeling ease.
- 2 to 4 weeks: the thick white dead skin thins and feels smooth to the touch.
- 6 to 12 weeks: if friction is reduced, darkness may slowly fade. The longer the habit, the longer it takes.
- If you stop, it comes back, because winter and friction are still there. So keep moisturising.
Common mistakes
- Rubbing lemon, baking soda or toothpaste. These irritate the skin, and irritation can leave it even darker afterwards.
- Scrubbing hard with a pumice stone or rough scrub. Friction is the cause. Hard scrubbing makes skin thicker.
- Hunting for lightening creams. Bleach or unknown "whitening" creams do not fix the real problem on elbows and knees, and some contain harmful ingredients. Avoid them.
- Using something for a few days at the start of winter and then stopping. Results come from steady use.
- Too many acids at once. Do not rub your face AHA toner on your elbows on the same night as the SA lotion.
The Bangladesh reality
Many of us sit on the floor to eat, cook and chat. Five daily prayers put pressure on the knees and forehead. On buses and rickshaws, elbows rub against window edges. And in winter everyone bathes in hot water. So dark, rough elbows and knees are extremely common here. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. A thin foam pad under your prayer mat or floor mat, and a little cream after prayer or before bed, make a real difference. When to see a doctor
Most of the time this is just friction and dryness. But see a dermatologist if you notice:
- Thick, velvety dark patches also on the neck, underarms or groin, especially if you are overweight, have PCOS or diabetes runs in your family. This is called acanthosis nigricans and can be a sign of insulin problems. A blood sugar test is needed. Read more in our guide to a darkened neck.
- Thick red patches with silvery scales on elbows or knees (possible psoriasis).
- Severe itching, oozing, or bleeding from cracks.
- Deep, painful heel cracks, redness, swelling or pus. If you have diabetes, get any crack on your feet checked quickly.
- No improvement after 6 to 8 weeks of steady care.
Do not use steroid creams on your own.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my elbows and knees dark and rough in winter?
Mostly friction, pressure and dryness. Leaning and kneeling thicken the skin, and winter dries that thick layer so it looks grey and dark. Use a rich cream such as CeraVe Moisturising Cream after every bath, CeraVe SA Lotion three to four nights a week, and pad your elbows and knees to reduce rubbing.
Does lemon or baking soda lighten dark elbows?
No, and they can make things worse. Lemon acid and alkaline baking soda irritate the skin, and irritation can leave it darker. Lemon in the sun can also cause burn marks. A rich moisturiser every day plus a gentle salicylic acid lotion a few nights a week is the safer, more effective route.
How often should I use CeraVe SA Lotion on elbows and knees?
Start every other night on clean, dry elbows and knees, in a thin layer. If there is no stinging, move to every night. Never apply it on open cracks. On other nights use just a rich cream. Expect smoother skin in 2 to 4 weeks.
When are dark elbows or knees a reason to see a doctor?
See a doctor if thick, velvety dark patches also appear on the neck, underarms or groin, as this can signal insulin problems; if there are red patches with silvery scales; if cracks bleed, ooze or hurt; or if nothing improves after 6 to 8 weeks. People with diabetes should get any foot crack checked quickly.
