Quick answer
In winter coconut oil works well on hair (1–2 teaspoons before shampoo, 2–3 drops on the ends) and on damp body skin, for example Ribana Organic Coconut Oil; but on acne-prone faces it can clog pores, so Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra Moisturising Lotion is safer there.

Coconut oil is very useful for hair and body in winter, but on the face it is not for everyone. For hair, use 1–2 teaspoons from 30 minutes to a night before shampoo, and 2–3 drops on damp ends after washing, for example Ribana Organic Coconut Oil. On the body, a few drops on damp skin after a bath; if you are very dry, apply a lotion such as CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin first. On acne-prone or oily faces, avoid coconut oil, because it can clog pores and worsen acne; Cerave Moisturizing Cream For Normal To Dry Skin for dry faces and Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra Moisturising Lotion for oily ones are safer.
Why coconut oil is so popular, and what it really does
Almost every home in Bangladesh has a bottle of coconut oil. Oiling hair is one of our oldest habits, and in winter many people rub the same oil on hands, feet and face. Coconut oil has a few genuine strengths:
- It can get inside the hair: its main fatty acid, lauric acid, is small. Research shows it partly penetrates the hair and helps hair lose less protein during washing. Many oils cannot do this; they just sit on top.
- It coats the skin: on dry body skin it forms a thin film, so less water evaporates. In some studies, virgin coconut oil improved hydration in dry skin prone to mild eczema.
- Easy to find, no sting: it has none of the pungent compound found in mustard oil, so it stings less on the body. There is a separate guide on mustard oil in winter: what is right.
But put the same oil on the face and the story changes.
On the face: who should skip it, who might use it
On the old lists that rank oils by how likely they are to clog pores, coconut oil sits near the top. That means on many faces it can block pores and cause whiteheads, blackheads and acne.
- Acne-prone, oily or combination skin: do not put coconut oil on your face. Use a light oil-free moisturiser such as Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra Moisturising Lotion.
- Very dry skin that does not break out: 1 drop over your cream at night, only on dry patches (cheekbones, sides of the nose), may be fine. If new bumps appear within two weeks, stop.
- Sensitive skin: coconut oil allergy is uncommon but not impossible. Test behind the ear for 2–3 days first.
If you want a face oil, read which suits whom in face oil in winter: when and for whom. For most people, though, a good cream such as Cerave Moisturizing Cream For Normal To Dry Skin is all the face needs.
On the body: how much, and when
- Take a lukewarm bath under 10 minutes. Very hot water strips the skin’s own oils.
- Pat dry with a towel and leave the skin slightly damp.
- If your skin is very dry, lotion first: CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin on arms, legs and back. It contains water, glycerin and ceramides, which oil does not.
- Then the oil: take 5–6 drops of coconut oil in your palm, rub your hands together and smooth it over legs, knees, elbows and the backs of the hands. The whole body needs no more than a teaspoon.
- If you feel greasy or it marks your clothes, use less.
If you get acne on your back or chest, keep coconut oil off those areas; lotion alone is enough.
On hair: the best use of all
In winter hair gets drier, the ends split and it tangles more. Coconut oil genuinely helps here.
Before shampoo (pre-wash)
- Take 1–2 teaspoons of Ribana Organic Coconut Oil, depending on length. One teaspoon is enough for shoulder-length hair.
- Apply more to the mid-lengths and ends than to the scalp.
- Leave it on from 30 minutes to overnight.
- Wash out with a gentle shampoo such as L'Oréal Paris Elvive Hyaluron + Plump 72H Hydrating Shampoo. If you used a lot of oil, you may need to shampoo twice.
- Apply conditioner to the ends, such as Tresemme Keratin Smooth Keratinbond+ No.2 Conditioner, leave it for 2–3 minutes and rinse.
On the ends after washing
While the hair is still slightly damp, rub 2–3 drops between your palms and smooth them over the ends only. Split ends look less obvious and the hair tangles less. If you prefer a cream to an oil, a small amount of Parachute Gold Coconut & Onion Hair Cream Strong & Thick with Vitamin E on the ends works too.
Be careful with the scalp
If you have dandruff, itching or yellow, greasy flakes on the scalp, do not load heavy oil onto it. The yeast behind this type of dandruff can thrive on oil, and oil build-up makes itching worse. For scalp care read winter scalp itch: what helps, and for the full oiling method see the right way to oil your hair.
Why coconut oil turns solid in winter, and what to do
Below roughly 24 degrees Celsius, coconut oil turns white and solid. This is not a sign it has gone off. Stand the bottle in a bowl of lukewarm water for a few minutes, or warm a little between your palms. Do not heat it on the stove or in a microwave; hot oil can burn your scalp and fingers. A wide-mouthed jar makes it easy to scoop out with a spoon, but never put wet fingers or a wet spoon inside.
Lips and baby skin
- Lips: coconut oil keeps lips soft for a short while but wears off quickly. A lip balm lasts longer through the day and night, such as Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter.
- Babies: for babies under 6 months, a fragrance-free baby moisturiser is the safest choice, such as Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion. If you want to use any oil on an older baby, talk to a paediatrician first. For winter newborn care, read winter care for newborn and baby skin.
At a glance: who it suits, who it does not
| Area | Good for | Not for |
|---|---|---|
| Hair | Dry, split-ended, curly hair | Very oily scalp, greasy dandruff |
| Body | Dry hands, feet, elbows, knees | Back or chest acne, itching from oil |
| Face | Very dry skin that does not break out (1 drop) | Acne-prone, oily, combination skin |
| Lips | Mildly dry lips, briefly | Cracked lips that need a balm |
Common mistakes
- Rubbing coconut oil into an acne-prone face every night.
- Using only oil on dry skin and skipping the lotion.
- Heating solid oil on the stove and putting it on the scalp.
- Leaving heavy oil on a dandruff-prone scalp every day.
- Oiling overnight and rinsing with water only in the morning, so oil builds up on the scalp.
- Using one bottle for face, hair and baby, dipping wet fingers into it.
The Bangladesh reality
- Loose oil and adulteration: the quality of loose coconut oil sold in markets is often questionable. Buy a sealed bottle with a clear label and expiry date.
- The dry winter of the north and the hills: in northern districts and hill areas the air is very dry; there, lotion before body oil matters.
- Washing less in the cold: many people shampoo less in winter, so oil builds up on the scalp and itching gets worse. If you oil your hair, wash it out within 2–3 days.
- Wedding season: oil your hair the night before an event and shampoo well in the morning; oil on the face can make makeup slide.

When to see a doctor
- Acne gets much worse, or painful deep bumps appear, after using oil on the face.
- Red patches, thick scales, sores or hair falling out in clumps on the scalp.
- Itchy red patches on the body that do not improve after two weeks of moisturiser, or that ooze.
- Swelling, a rash or intense itching after applying the oil.

Frequently asked questions
Does coconut oil on the face cause acne?
For many people, yes. Coconut oil ranks high among pore-clogging oils, so on acne-prone, oily or combination skin it can cause blackheads, whiteheads and breakouts. Keep it off those faces and use a light oil-free moisturiser such as Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra Moisturising Lotion instead.
How long should I leave coconut oil in my hair?
From 30 minutes to overnight before shampoo. One teaspoon is enough for shoulder-length hair; focus on the mid-lengths and ends. Wash out with a gentle shampoo and condition the ends. Do not leave oil on the scalp for more than 2–3 days, as build-up causes itching.
Is coconut oil good for dry body skin in winter?
Yes, on damp skin after a lukewarm bath, about 5–6 drops at a time. If your skin is very dry, apply a lotion such as CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin first, because it adds water and ceramides that oil lacks, then seal with a little coconut oil.
Why does coconut oil go solid in winter?
Coconut oil solidifies below about 24 degrees Celsius; it has not gone bad. Stand the bottle in lukewarm water for a few minutes or warm a little between your palms. Never heat it on the stove or in a microwave, as hot oil can burn the scalp.
