The short answer

Winter care for newborns and babies up to 2 years means fewer and gentler things. Bath 2–3 times a week in lukewarm water for 5–10 minutes, with very little cleanser, such as Cetaphil Baby Wash & Shampoo With Natural Calendula or Cetaphil Baby Mild Bar. Pat dry and apply fragrance-free Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion all over. For chapped cheeks and drool rash, a thin layer of Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft at night. Under 6 months, protect from sun with shade and clothing; after 6 months use Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Sunscreen SPF 50 on exposed skin. No adult creams, lotions or perfumes on a baby, ever.

Why a baby's skin is different

A baby's skin is much thinner than an adult's, and its protective barrier takes the early years to fully develop. So it loses water fast, reddens easily and absorbs more of whatever you put on it. Dry winter air, warm clothes and constant wiping make chapped cheeks, rough arms and legs and nappy rash very common. The good news is that, with the right routine, most of this can be handled at home.

Bathing: how often, how warm, how long

  1. How often: in winter, a full bath 2–3 times a week is enough for newborns and young babies. On other days, wipe the face, neck folds, hands and nappy area with a soft damp cloth. Until the umbilical cord stump falls off, give sponge baths instead of a tub and keep the stump dry.
  2. Water temperature: lukewarm, close to body temperature. Test with your elbow; if it feels hot, it is too hot. Put cold water in first, then add hot.
  3. Time: 5–10 minutes. Longer in water dries the skin more and chills the baby.
  4. Cleanser: very little, only on the neck, underarms, folds and nappy area. Cetaphil Baby Wash & Shampoo With Natural Calendula works for hair and body; if you prefer a bar, Cetaphil Baby Mild Bar. Under 6 months, plain water is often enough.
  5. Room: bath the baby in a warm room with doors and windows shut. Keep the towel and clothes ready within reach.
  6. Drying: pat with a soft towel, dry the folds, but put the lotion on before the skin becomes completely dry.

Massage and mustard oil: the honest picture

Oil massage is an old and loving tradition in Bangladesh. Massage itself is good: babies relax, sleep better, and it builds the bond between parent and child. The real question is which oil or cream to use.

  • What research says about mustard oil: studies, including some carried out in Bangladesh, found that mustard oil can irritate some babies' skin and weaken the skin barrier, especially in newborns and babies born early. That is why many paediatricians now suggest massaging with a plain fragrance-free baby moisturiser instead.
  • This does not mean your mother or grandmother was wrong, or that you have already harmed your baby with oil. Many babies have no problem at all. We simply know a better option now.
  • How to do it: after the bath, warm your hands, take a little Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion, and stroke gently for 5–10 minutes, starting at the legs, then arms, tummy and back.
  • If the family still wants to use oil: not oil heated with garlic or onion, never in the nose, ears or eyes, not on cracked skin or a rash, and never leave an oiled baby lying in strong sun. Wipe off any excess.
  • Under 6 months, no essential oils or scented oils at all.

Moisturiser: which one, when, how much

  • For every day: fragrance-free Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion. Within 3 minutes of the bath, and once in the morning on non-bath days.
  • Amount: a little more than a pea for one arm or one leg. A thin layer is enough; if the skin looks shiny and wet, you have used too much.
  • Very dry spots (cheeks, backs of hands, knees): 2–3 times a day. If you need something thicker, a thin layer of Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft.
  • Before starting anything new, test a little behind the ear or on the arm for a day.
  • "Baby" on the label is not enough on its own; under 6 months, check that it says fragrance-free. How to read the label is in which baby lotion is good.

Chapped cheeks, drool rash and lips

  • Red, chapped cheeks: winter wind plus drool cracks the cheeks. Apply a thin layer of Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft before going out and at night; it forms a shield against wind and saliva.
  • Drool rash (chin and neck folds): worse when teething. Pat with a soft cotton cloth instead of rubbing. Apply a thin layer of cream before sleep and feeds. Keep the neck folds dry and change wet bibs.
  • Lips: no adult lip balm for babies; they contain flavour, scent or colour, and babies swallow them. Put a tiny amount of baby lotion or cream around the lips with a fingertip.

The nappy area

  1. Change the nappy as soon as it is wet, even in winter. Check at least once during the night.
  2. Clean with lukewarm water and cotton or a soft cloth; use scented wipes as little as possible.
  3. Let the skin air-dry for a few minutes before the next nappy (in a warm room).
  4. For nappy rash, a dedicated zinc oxide rash cream gives a stronger barrier, but it is not on our shelf right now; you can get one from a pharmacy. If there is no redness and the skin is intact, a thin layer of Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft is fine.
  5. Do not use powder; babies can breathe it in.

Sun, clothes and wool

  • Under 6 months: keep out of direct sun. Shade, a hat and light full-sleeved clothing are the protection. No sunscreen at this age unless a doctor advises it.
  • After 6 months: when going out, a thin layer of Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Sunscreen SPF 50 on the face, backs of hands and exposed legs, 15 minutes before leaving. Keep it away from the eyes. More in from what age babies can use sunscreen.
  • "Giving the baby sun": many families put babies in the winter morning sun. A short time in soft early sun is fine, as long as the skin never turns red. Talk to your paediatrician about vitamin D needs; do not try to meet them by letting the baby's skin burn.
  • Clothes: a cotton layer against the skin, a woollen sweater on top. Wool directly on skin itches. Wash new clothes in a mild detergent and rinse well before use.
  • Not too warm: one layer more than an adult is enough. Overheating causes heat rash, and overheating during sleep is also a risk for babies. Feel the back of the neck; if it is sweaty, remove a layer.

Common mistakes

  • Adult products on a baby. Adult body lotion, brightening creams, perfume, adult sunscreen or mum's face cream are not for babies, not even "just a little". The full list of what to avoid is in what not to use on a baby's skin.
  • Long hot baths every day. They dry the skin more.
  • Scented soap or antiseptic liquid in the bath water.
  • Home mixtures: no lemon, gram flour and turmeric packs, honey (honey near the mouth is risky under 1 year) or toothpaste on a baby's skin. Glycerin and rose water is fine for adults, but the rose scent can irritate a baby, so a plain baby lotion is better.
  • Kajal or surma in the eyes. Many contain harmful metals and they raise the risk of eye infection.

Bangladesh reality

In winter, many homes wrap babies in several layers, rub them with oil and lay them in the sun on the balcony. There is experience and love behind this from grandmothers; talk to them gently, not in an argument. You might say, "Let's keep the massage, just with this lotion instead of oil." When visiting the village home or cold places like Sylhet or Sreemangal, pack the lotion, cream and spare cotton clothes. Children over 5 need a different routine, covered in the winter routine for 5–12 year olds. For the whole family's day, read the 24-hour winter skincare routine, and quick answers are in children and babies questions. A general routine is also in baby skincare.

Why buy authentic

A baby's skin readily absorbs what is applied, so fake or expired baby lotion carries more risk than for adults. TheSkinProof is an invoice-verified skincare marketplace: the import paperwork of every product is checked. If a product is proven counterfeit, you get 2× your money back; claims must be made within 7 days of delivery. We deliver across Bangladesh with cash on delivery.

When to see a doctor

  • Fever under 3 months of age (100.4°F / 38°C or higher): immediately.
  • A rash with fever, or a baby who is floppy, not feeding or crying unusually.
  • Small purple or red spots that do not fade when pressed: an emergency, do not wait.
  • Yellow crusts, oozing, blisters or pus (possible infection).
  • Nappy rash that does not improve in 2–3 days, bright red inside the folds, or small bumps or blisters.
  • Rough, itchy patches that disturb sleep, crack or spread (possible eczema; see baby eczema care).
  • Yellow skin or eyes in a newborn, especially in the week after birth or if it is increasing.
  • Redness, swelling, a bad smell or discharge around the umbilical cord.
  • White patches inside the mouth that do not wipe off.
  • Swelling, hives or breathing difficulty after a new product: an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I bath a newborn in winter?

Two or three full baths a week are enough in winter. Use lukewarm water tested with your elbow and finish in 5–10 minutes. On other days wipe the face, folds and nappy area with a soft damp cloth. Sponge-bath until the cord stump falls off, then apply a fragrance-free baby lotion.

Is mustard oil massage safe for newborns?

Massage is good, but a fragrance-free baby moisturiser is the safer choice. Studies, including some in Bangladesh, found mustard oil can irritate some babies and weaken the skin barrier. After the bath, massage gently for 5–10 minutes with Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion instead.

What should I put on my baby's chapped cheeks in winter?

A thin layer of Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft before going out and at night, to shield the cheeks from wind and drool. Pat drool away instead of rubbing. Under 6 months, fragrance-free Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion 2–3 times a day also works. See a doctor if the skin cracks and oozes.

Can I use adult creams on my baby?

No. Adult body lotions, brightening creams, perfumed products, adult sunscreen and your own face cream can irritate a baby's thinner skin, which absorbs more. Use genuine baby products such as Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion and Cetaphil Baby Wash & Shampoo With Natural Calendula, and fragrance-free basics under 6 months.

When should a baby's skin problem be seen by a doctor?

Straight away for fever under 3 months, a rash with fever, or spots that do not fade when pressed. Also see a doctor for oozing, yellow crusts or blisters, nappy rash not improving in 2–3 days, yellow skin in a newborn, or a red, smelly cord area.
