The rule is thinnest to thickest. Morning: cleanser → toner → serum → moisturiser → sunscreen. At night, swap sunscreen for a slightly richer cream, and if you are wearing makeup, start with a cleansing oil. Wait 30 seconds to 2 minutes between steps, and at least 5 minutes after sunscreen before makeup. Use two finger lengths of sunscreen for face and neck. And do not start any new acid or retinoid in the Puja week.
Which product on which day is covered in Puja Day Skincare: Morning, Pandal and Night. This guide is the next step: what order, how much and when to apply what you already have.
Why order matters
Thin, watery products sink in fast. A thick cream sits on top like a film. Put serum over cream and it just sits there. Sunscreen goes last because it needs an even, unbroken layer to protect you. Get the order wrong and products pill into little rolls when you rub, and makeup goes patchy.

You do not need every step. Oily skin can skip toner or serum; never skip face wash, moisturiser and sunscreen.
Morning, step by step
1. Face wash. Pea-size, 30 seconds on wet skin, rinse with plain water, pat dry.
2. Toner. No cotton pad. Press 3–4 drops in with your palms and move on while skin is still slightly damp.
3. Serum. 2–3 drops. More makes skin tacky and makes sunscreen pill.
4. Moisturiser. A light gel by day. Dot a pea-size amount on forehead, cheeks, chin and nose, spread, and use what is left on the neck.
5. Sunscreen. Squeeze a line along your index and middle fingers from base to tip. That is roughly enough for face and neck. Do not miss ears, under the jaw or the back of the neck. Let it set for at least 5 minutes before primer or foundation.
6. Lips. A thin coat of SPF lip balm, lipstick 2 minutes later.
On an early Anjali morning, the essentials take under ten minutes: wash, moisturise, sunscreen.
Night, step by step
1. Cleansing oil, if you wore makeup. 2–3 pumps on dry skin with dry hands, massage for a minute, add a little water until it turns milky, then rinse. More detail in How to Remove Heavy Puja Makeup.
2. Face wash. Same wash, pea-size. No more than twice a day.
3. Toner and serum. As in the morning.
4. Richer cream. A ceramide cream, slightly more than pea-size. Oily skin can stay with the gel.
No sunscreen at night. However late you get home, wash your face before bed, all four nights to Dashami.
How long to wait
- After toner: 30 seconds, skin still slightly damp.
- After serum: 1 minute, until it no longer feels sticky.
- After moisturiser: 2 minutes.
- After sunscreen: 5–10 minutes before makeup.
- If it pills: use less serum next time and press rather than rub.
What not to start or mix in the Puja week
- No new acids or retinoids from Shashthi to Dashami. Sun, sweat and sindoor on top can mean redness and stinging.
- Already using them? Pause for the four Puja days and restart after Dashami.
- No two actives on the same night, and no scrubs.
- Patch test any new product behind the ear or under the jaw for two or three days, at least a week before Puja.
Reapplying sunscreen over makeup
By midday, sweat and blotting have removed much of your morning layer. Reapply every 2–3 hours outdoors:
- Stick: press the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick over makeup on nose, forehead, cheekbones and neck. Press, do not drag.
- Mist: close your eyes and spray the Dot & Key Strawberry Dew Sunscreen Mist from arm's length, away from the crowd.
- Powder: the Lakme 9 to 5 Sun Expert Compact Powder Sunscreen suits oily skin and cuts shine, but it is a top-up, not a replacement for the morning layer.
Blot sweat with a tissue before reapplying. Do not splash water. Sunscreen comparisons by skin type: Which Sunscreen for Puja.
In your bag
Sun stick or mist, clean tissues or blotting paper, lip balm, a small water bottle.
If skin gets oily, sweaty or irritated
- Oily: blot, then powder sunscreen. See Pandal Hopping: Controlling Oily Skin.
- Sunscreen running into eyes: use the stick around the eyes.
- Stinging or redness: that night, skip toner and serum and stop the newest product.
- Sindoor or alta allergy, burns, or a rash that spreads: see a doctor. Aftercare: After Sindoor Khela.

Frequently asked questions
What order should I apply skincare in for Puja?
Go from thinnest to thickest: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, then sunscreen last in the morning. At night, skip sunscreen and use a slightly richer cream, starting with a cleansing oil if you wore makeup.
How much sunscreen should I use on my face?
Use two finger lengths, a line along your index and middle fingers, for the face and neck. Include the ears, under the jaw and the back of the neck.
How long should I wait between skincare steps?
About 30 seconds after toner, 1 minute after serum, 2 minutes after moisturiser and 5 to 10 minutes after sunscreen before makeup. If products pill, use less and press rather than rub.
How do I reapply sunscreen over makeup?
Blot sweat with a tissue, then press a sunscreen stick over makeup, spray a sunscreen mist from arm’s length, or use a powder sunscreen on oily skin. Reapply every 2 to 3 hours outdoors.
Should oily skin skip moisturiser and go straight to sunscreen?
No, oily skin still needs a light, gel-based moisturiser before sunscreen so the layers sit evenly instead of pilling. Skipping it can make sunscreen and makeup separate faster later in the day.
Does humid weather change how long to wait between skincare steps?
In humid weather products can take slightly longer to settle, so give each step at least a minute and move on once it no longer feels wet on the skin. Rushing the wait time in humidity is a common reason layers ball up under makeup.
