Five things cover the Ashtami Anjali morning: a gentle cleanser, a light moisturizer, sunscreen (two finger-lengths for face and neck), an SPF lip balm and a rice-grain of eye cream. Shower included, it takes 15–20 minutes. Oily skin: COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser and Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence. Dry skin: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Gel. If you wear makeup, wait at least 10 minutes after sunscreen. Do not open anything new on a fasting morning.
Why the Anjali morning is different
Most homes follow the same pattern on Ashtami: up early, bath, new saree or panjabi, then to the mandap on an empty stomach. No breakfast until after anjali. Three things show on your face:
- Short sleep and no food. A late Saptami arati, then an early start, leaves skin pale and eyes puffy. A cold compress and light eye cream help.
- Crowd, incense and heat. Dhuno smoke, lamp heat and a packed mandap make oily skin shine within an hour.
- Sun. Anjali runs from morning to before noon. Walking or a rickshaw ride there, and waiting in line, is enough sun to darken skin.
Every family has its own rule on water. If yours allows it, drink a glass on waking; if not, drink one or two glasses as soon as anjali ends. If you have diabetes or blood pressure problems, or are pregnant, ask your doctor about fasting beforehand.
Bath and face wash
- Water: plain or lukewarm. Very hot water leaves skin tight, and oily skin then makes more oil.
- Hair before face. Rinse shampoo and conditioner, then wash your face last so conditioner residue does not sit on the forehead and jaw. More on hair: Puja hair care.
- Which cleanser: oily or combination skin, COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser; dry or sensitive, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. A pea-sized amount, 30–40 seconds on wet skin, rinse.
- No body soap on the face, and no scrub this morning. Rubbed skin turns red in the crowd's heat.
- Dry by patting, not rubbing, and move on while skin is still slightly damp.
A cold, damp cloth over the eyes for one minute takes down some puffiness. Do not rub ice on your face.
What goes on, in what order
Thin to thick, sunscreen last before makeup.
- Moisturizer. Oily or combination: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. Dry: Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. A pea-sized amount, some on the neck. Let it sit two minutes.
- Under the eyes. A rice-grain of CeraVe Eye Repair Cream with the ring finger, patted from inner to outer corner.
- Sunscreen. Two finger-lengths for face and neck, plus ears, back of the neck and the forehead along the hair parting. Oily: Biore UV Aqua Rich. Dry: Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Gel.
- Lips. A thin layer of Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50. For lipstick, let it sit five minutes and blot once.
No serum needed. If you already use a light hyaluronic or niacinamide serum, it goes before moisturizer; do not start one now. No retinol or strong AHA/BHA peels in Puja week.
The 15–20 minute sequence
| Time | What to do | How long |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 | Bath, hair wash, face wash last | 8 min |
| 0:08 | Pat dry, cold cloth on eyes | 1 min |
| 0:09 | Moisturizer, face and neck | 1 min |
| 0:10 | Eye cream, let it settle | 2 min |
| 0:12 | Sunscreen: face, neck, ears, back of neck | 1 min |
| 0:13 | Lip balm; dress and tie hair meanwhile | 5–7 min |
| 0:20 | Ready to leave. Makeup starts after 0:22, at least 10 minutes after sunscreen | — |
Foundation over wet sunscreen pills and thins your protection. Dress during the wait.
Small changes by skin type
Oily skin
- Gel moisturizer, watery sunscreen.
- On the nose and forehead, apply sunscreen in two thin layers a minute apart rather than one thick one.
- Powder, if any, on the nose, forehead and chin.
- Blot rather than wash at the mandap. More: pandal hopping with oily skin.
Dry skin
- Fasting and short sleep make dry skin tighter. Apply lotion within three minutes of your bath.
- A little extra on the cheeks, with a second thin layer if needed.
- For chapped lips, sleep in a thick layer of Vaseline Lip Therapy the night before.
Combination skin
- Gel moisturizer all over, a little extra on dry cheeks.
- Blot the T-zone; leave the cheeks.
- More: oily and combination skin through Puja humidity.
What to carry to the mandap
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick | Reapply after anjali without wet hands |
| Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 | Lips dry fast when fasting and in smoke |
| Blotting paper or clean tissue | Lift oil without ruining makeup |
| Small cotton handkerchief | Press sweat, do not wipe |
| Water bottle | Drink as soon as anjali ends |
| A couple of safety pins and hair clips | Keep hands off your face |
If something goes wrong at the mandap
- Sweat and oil: press a tissue, then swipe the stick. Splashing water removes sunscreen.
- Eyes sting from dhuno smoke: do not rub. Step into open air.
- Dizzy or weak: sit down in the shade at once and tell someone. Eat and drink after anjali.
- Itching from flowers, sandalwood or sindoor: rinse with plain water. If redness spreads, blisters form or eyes or lips swell, see a doctor. For a small burn from a lamp or dhunuchi, hold it under cool running water for 10–15 minutes; see a doctor for a large blister. More: after sindoor khela.
Not on this morning
- New products. Patch test anything new behind the ear or under the jaw at least two days ahead.
- Scrubs, peels, retinol all week.
- Repeated face splashing.
- Heavy powder, which streaks with sweat.

After anjali
Eat, then reapply sunscreen before heading out to the pandals, and every 2–3 hours outdoors. Wash your face before bed however late it is; for heavy makeup see removing Puja makeup. The full day plan: the Puja-day skincare routine.

Frequently asked questions
What should I put on my face on the morning of Ashtami Anjali?
Wash with a gentle cleanser, then apply a light moisturizer, two finger-lengths of SPF 50 sunscreen for face and neck, an SPF lip balm and a little eye cream. The whole routine, shower included, takes 15 to 20 minutes.
How long should I wait after sunscreen before applying makeup?
At least 10 minutes. Foundation over sunscreen that has not set tends to pill and thins your protection, so get dressed during the wait.
Is it fine to use skincare while fasting for Puja?
Yes. Fasting does not affect cleanser, moisturizer or sunscreen use. Avoid opening any new product that morning and stick with what your skin already knows.
How can oily, sweaty skin stay matte for Anjali in October heat?
Use a lightweight gel moisturiser and a fluid or gel sunscreen instead of a heavy cream, and blot shine with tissue rather than piling on more powder. Carrying a compact sun stick lets you touch up quickly even when your hands are full with flowers.
Where can I buy an authentic lightweight facial sunscreen essence in Bangladesh for Puja mornings?
Buy from a seller who can show the importer invoice and batch number for that specific sunscreen rather than relying on listing photos alone. Checking the batch code on the tube against the box is worth doing before Anjali morning, not after.
