Do You Need a Night Cream in Winter? Which One, for Whom, and How

You do not have to buy a "night cream" in winter, but everyone needs a slightly richer moisturiser at night: a rich CeraVe or Cetaphil cream for dry skin, iUNIK Beta-Glucan for oily skin, and CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream after 30.

The short answer

In winter you do not have to buy a product labelled "night cream", but almost everyone needs a slightly richer moisturiser at night than in the day. For dry skin, Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin or Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin does the night job well. For oily or combination skin, the lighter iUNIK Beta-Glucan Daily Moisture Cream is enough. After 30, CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream is a good option. Amount: about two pea-sized blobs for the face and neck. Serum first, cream after. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, skip any cream with retinol.

This article is only about winter. For which night cream is best all year round, see our which night cream is best guide. Here we explain how winter changes the choice, and how to set up your night routine.

What actually happens to your skin on a winter night

From December to February the air loses humidity. The dry northern wind pulls water out of your skin all day. At night we take hot baths, some of us run a room heater, and we sleep warm under a lep or a heavy blanket. Together, these make your skin lose even more water during seven or eight hours of sleep.

It is true that skin repairs itself while you sleep. But for that repair, the outer layer, the barrier, needs to be in good shape. In winter that barrier develops cracks. That is why your face feels tight when you wake up, skin flakes beside your nose, and your cheeks feel rough. A night cream's job is to stop that water loss and support the barrier with ingredients like ceramides, glycerin and shea butter.

Night cream versus a regular moisturiser

Many people think a night cream is something magical. In reality, most night creams are just a slightly richer moisturiser, sometimes with an active such as retinol, peptides or niacinamide. You do not need sunscreen at night, so night creams have no SPF, and being thick is fine because you do not put makeup on top.

So in winter you have three paths:

  • Path 1: The same cream day and night, just a bit more at night. On a tight budget this is the smartest choice.
  • Path 2: A light lotion or gel in the day and a richer cream at night. For dry and combination skin this is the most comfortable winter setup.
  • Path 3: A night cream with an active, such as retinol or peptides. This is mainly for people past 25 to 30, and needs care in winter.

Which one for your skin type in winter

Dry skin

Dry skin suffers most in winter. You need a thick, ceramide-based cream. Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin or Bioderma Atoderm Crème Ultra-Nourishing Cream work well at night. If you are very flaky, keep your face slightly damp before the cream.

Oily and acne-prone skin

Oily skin also runs short of water underneath in winter, so do not skip moisturiser. Instead of a heavy cream, choose a light gel-cream: iUNIK Beta-Glucan Daily Moisture Cream or Purito Seoul Oat-In Calming Gel Cream. There is a detailed list in our night cream for oily skin guide.

Combination skin

Dry cheeks, oily nose and forehead? Put one light cream all over, then a second thin layer only on the cheeks and around the mouth. You do not need to buy two creams.

Sensitive skin

Choose a fragrance-free cream with few ingredients. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin or Dr. Althea 147 Barrier Cream are worth considering. Before starting anything new, patch test behind the ear or under the jaw for three days.

By age

13 to 19

Teenagers do not need a separate night cream. Washing the face at night and using a light lotion such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion for Normal to Dry Sensitive Skin is enough. If you are on acne medication, moisturiser matters even more, because the medication dries the skin.

20 to 30

At this age your night moisturiser is your night cream. If you are worried about marks or slight texture, you can add a niacinamide serum, but in winter sort out the cream first.

30 to 45

Early signs of ageing, fine lines at the corners of the eyes and more winter dryness arrive together. A renewing night cream like CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream or Cetaphil Healthy Renew Night Cream helps. If you want retinol, start Dot & Key Skin Care Retinol + Ceramide Night Repair Cream on two or three nights a week.

Over 50

Skin becomes thinner and drier, so a rich ceramide cream is the main step. If you are starting retinol for the first time, go very slowly, and starting in spring instead of winter is also a sensible decision.

How much, and when

  • Amount: About two pea-sized blobs for the face and neck. Three if you are very dry.
  • Timing: At least 20 to 30 minutes before sleep, so it does not wipe off on the pillow.
  • How: Dot it on the forehead, both cheeks, chin and nose, then spread gently. Do not rub hard.
  • Do not forget the neck: Neck skin dries in winter too, so take the rest down to your neck.

Order in the night routine: serum, retinol and night cream

The rule is simple: thin things first, thick things last.

  1. Wash with a gentle cleanser such as CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Normal to Dry.
  2. Leave your face slightly damp instead of drying it fully.
  3. If you use a hydrating serum, apply it now, for example The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. Read more in our how to use serums in winter article.
  4. After a minute or two, apply the night cream.
  5. Put a balm or a lip mask on your lips, such as Care:Nel Lip Night Mask - Lime.

What to change in winter if you use retinol

Retinol stings more in winter, because the barrier is already weak. So:

  • Drop from every night to two or three nights a week.
  • Use the "sandwich" method: a thin layer of moisturiser, then retinol, then moisturiser again.
  • On a retinol night, no acid toner and no scrub.
  • Keep it away from the eyelids, the corners of the nose and the edges of the lips.

For the full retinol rules, read our retinol guide.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

During this time, do not use any night cream with retinol, retinal or other retinoids. Avoid high-strength acids too. A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin is enough at night. If you are unsure about any product, show the label to your doctor. The complete winter routine for this time is in our safe winter skincare in pregnancy article.

Common mistakes

  • Rubbing a little cream on a bone-dry face. Cream on slightly damp skin works much better.
  • Skipping moisturiser because your skin is oily. This makes the skin produce more oil.
  • Increasing retinol in winter. Reduce it in winter, do not increase it.
  • Starting three or four new products at once. If you get irritated, you will not know which one caused it.
  • Washing your face with very hot water. Lukewarm water is enough.
  • Thinking a night cream changes skin colour. No night cream changes your skin tone; a good cream keeps skin healthy and comfortable.

The Bangladesh reality

Winter nights in Dhaka bring more dust and smoke, so never skip washing your face before bed. Many homes do not run a heater, but the warmth of a lep and hot-water baths are enough to dry the skin out. In wedding season you come home late and have no patience for removing makeup and applying cream; at least take the makeup off with micellar water and put on any moisturiser. On winter trips to Sylhet, Sreemangal or Bandarban the nights are colder, so keep a small tube of rich cream in your bag. Buying one large tub for the family and sharing it also keeps the cost down; just use a clean spoon or clean fingers.

Why authentic products matter

A night cream sits on your skin for seven or eight hours. A fake or expired cream may contain unknown fragrance, the wrong ingredients or germs, which do more harm to weak winter skin. TheSkinProof is an invoice-verified skincare marketplace: the source invoice of every product is checked. If a product is proven counterfeit, you get 2× your money back when you claim within 7 days of delivery. Delivery across Bangladesh, cash on delivery available.

When to see a doctor

  • Stinging, redness or swelling after a cream that does not settle within two or three days.
  • Red, scaly, itchy patches on the face that do not improve after two weeks of moisturiser.
  • Skin that cracks and bleeds, or shows pus or yellow crusts.
  • During pregnancy, sudden intense itching all over the body, especially on the palms and soles; tell your doctor without delay.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a separate night cream in winter?

No, it is not essential. You can use your daytime moisturiser at night in a slightly larger amount. For dry skin, though, a rich ceramide cream such as Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin feels far more comfortable overnight. On a tight budget, one good cream for day and night is enough.

Which night cream suits oily skin in winter?

Use a light gel-cream, not a heavy one. iUNIK Beta-Glucan Daily Moisture Cream or Purito Seoul Oat-In Calming Gel Cream are good options. Apply two pea-sized amounts on slightly damp skin after washing at night. Oily skin also lacks water in winter, so do not skip moisturiser.

Can I keep using retinol in winter?

Yes, but less often. Use it on two or three nights a week instead of every night, sandwiched between thin layers of moisturiser. Beginners can start with Dot & Key Skin Care Retinol + Ceramide Night Repair Cream. Avoid acid toners and scrubs on the same night, and always wear sunscreen the next day.

Is it safe to use a night cream during pregnancy?

Yes, as long as it has no retinol or other retinoids and no high-strength acids. A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin is enough at night. The same rule applies while breastfeeding. If you are unsure about a product, show the label to your doctor.
