Quick answer
After 30 or 40, winter dries skin fast and deepens lines; use CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, Cetaphil Rich Hydrating Cream and La Roche Posay Anthelios Uvmune 400 Hydrating Cream in the morning and CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream at night. Cut back retinol, and stop it in pregnancy.

After 30 or 40, winter dries skin faster, so fine lines look deeper. The fix is simple: a gentle cleanser, a richer cream and daily sunscreen. In the morning wash with CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Normal to Dry, apply Cetaphil Rich Hydrating Cream, then La Roche Posay Anthelios Uvmune 400 Hydrating Cream SPF50+. At night use CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, or Cetaphil Moisturising Cream For Dry To Normal Sensitive Skin if you are very dry. Take the same cream down to your neck and onto the backs of your hands. If you already use retinol, cut it to 2–3 nights a week in winter; if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, stop retinol completely.
Why skin struggles more in winter as we age
Skin that bounced back after one night's sleep in your twenties no longer does after 35. There are a few simple reasons:
- Less oil. Sebum production falls with age, so the dry northern wind tightens skin faster.
- A weaker barrier. Ceramides, the fats that hold skin together, decline, so more water escapes. That is why ceramide creams work especially well at this age.
- Thinner skin. Collagen slowly drops, so when skin dries out, lines around the eyes, forehead and lips look deeper. Many of those lines are mostly dryness; with proper moisture they soften within days.
- Hormonal change. After 40 many women enter perimenopause, the years before periods stop. Oestrogen falls and skin can suddenly feel much drier and itchier. This is normal, but your routine has to change.
So winter care at this age is not about more products. It is about the right products, in the right amount, at the right time.
The daily routine: when, how much, in what order
Morning (5 minutes)
- Wash with lukewarm water. If you are very dry, plain water is fine in the morning; otherwise a pea-sized amount of CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Normal to Dry. It foams very little, so it does not strip your oil.
- Apply cream while your face is still slightly damp: a fingertip of Cetaphil Rich Hydrating Cream on the face and a little more on the neck.
- Two finger-lengths of sunscreen on face and neck. On dry skin La Roche Posay Anthelios Uvmune 400 Hydrating Cream SPF50+ or Cerave Hydrating Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF50 sit well because they are creamy and do not tighten.
- On the lips, The Derma Co 1% Ceramide Complex Lip Balm SPF30 PA++; it has SPF, so it suits the daytime.
Midday
At the office or outside, reapply lip balm. If you sit by a window or go outdoors, reapply sunscreen at midday. Over makeup you can press a cushion or powder sunscreen lightly on top.
After a bath
Keep baths under 10 minutes and the water lukewarm. Pat dry and within 3 minutes apply Bioderma Atoderm Crème Ultra-Nourishing Cream to arms, legs, elbows and neck. The full method is in the 3-minute rule after a bath.
Night (30 minutes before bed)
- Wash off the day's sunscreen and makeup with your cleanser; do not rub for more than 30–40 seconds.
- If you use retinol (read the section below), apply a pea-sized amount to dry skin.
- On top, CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, or Cetaphil Moisturising Cream For Dry To Normal Sensitive Skin if very dry, on the face, neck and upper chest.
- If the under-eye area feels tight, tap a rice-grain amount of Cerave Skin Renewing Eye Cream 14.2g with your ring finger without pressing.
- Rub what is left on your fingers into the backs of your hands, and put a thick layer of balm on your lips.
Retinol in winter: who continues, who stops
Retinol is one of the most researched ingredients for fine lines, but it dries skin. So winter has its own rules:
- You already use it and your skin is used to it: continue, but on 2–3 nights a week. If skin stings or peels, take a week off. A gentle strength like The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane is easier in winter because it comes in squalane.
- You have never used it: it is better not to start in the middle of winter dryness. Fix the dryness first, then start if you wish. How to start is in our retinol guide.
- Pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding: do not use retinol, retinal or any retinoid at all. No high-strength acids either. Decide what is safe together with your doctor. There is a separate guide: safe winter skincare in pregnancy.
- Retinol goes on at night, on dry skin; sunscreen the next morning is not optional.
- Do not mix retinol with scrubs, AHAs or BHAs on the same night.
Neck and hands: where age shows first
Many people care for the face and forget the neck and the backs of the hands. Skin there is thin, has few oil glands and sits in the sun all year.
- Take your face cream and sunscreen over the front and sides of the neck, stroking upwards.
- After every hand wash, apply a little cream. A dedicated hand cream is not on our shelf right now; a thick Cetaphil Moisturising Cream For Dry To Normal Sensitive Skin or Bioderma Atoderm Crème Ultra-Nourishing Cream works well on hands too.
- Wear gloves for washing dishes or clothes when you can. Detergent dries hands more than anything else.
- When you go out, put sunscreen on the backs of your hands; age spots appear there first.
Sudden extra dryness in perimenopause
After 40 many women say, "my old cream doesn't work any more." It is not your imagination; as hormones fall, skin holds less water. What you can do:
- Move from lotion to cream, and use two layers at night if needed.
- Choose fragrance-free products, because skin is more sensitive during this time.
- If your whole body itches, keep bath water on the cooler side and apply body cream right after.
- Drink enough water and sleep well; a bowl of water near a room heater helps a little, though the cream does the main work.
- If you also have hot flushes, sleep problems or low mood, talk to a gynaecologist; your skin dryness can be discussed at the same visit.
Common mistakes
- Staying on a foaming or anti-acne face wash. A summer face wash dries skin even more in winter.
- Skipping sunscreen in winter. UVA comes through even on foggy days, and it is a major cause of age spots and lines. The reasons are in winter sunscreen.
- Too many actives at once. Vitamin C, retinol and acids all together weaken the barrier and make lines look worse.
- Washing your face with very hot water. It feels good but washes away your oil.
- Lemon, baking soda or toothpaste on the face. Lemon can worsen marks in the sun, baking soda upsets skin pH, toothpaste irritates. If you want something safe at home, a few drops of glycerin in rose water before your cream is fine; it draws water in, but it does not replace cream.
- Expecting overnight results. Moisture shows within days; retinol results take 8–12 weeks.
Bangladesh reality
In December and January, Dhaka's air is full of dust and smoke, and northern districts get biting dry wind. Many women manage office, home and a child's school run at the same time; a five-step routine is not always possible. So keep the three essentials in mind: gentle cleanser, thick cream, sunscreen. During wedding season with heavy makeup, remove it properly at night and then apply a rich cream. On nights with a room heater or a geyser bath, skin dries more, so use a little extra cream. The full women's winter guide is our winter skincare guide for women, and a general routine by age is in skincare in your 20s, 30s and 40s. Frequently asked questions
What cream should I use on my face in winter after 30?
Choose a rich ceramide cream. In the morning, a fingertip of Cetaphil Rich Hydrating Cream on face and neck; at night, CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream. If you are very dry or sensitive, the fragrance-free Cetaphil Moisturising Cream For Dry To Normal Sensitive Skin. Apply it while skin is still slightly damp.
Can I keep using retinol in winter?
Yes, if you already use it and your skin is used to it. Drop to 2–3 nights a week, follow with a thick cream and wear sunscreen every morning. Pause for a week if it stings or peels. If you are new to it, avoid starting mid-winter. Never use retinoids while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why do fine lines look deeper in winter?
Because dry skin makes lines look deeper. With age, skin oil, ceramides and collagen decline, and dry winter air pulls out water. A thick ceramide cream, lukewarm water and daily sunscreen soften many lines within days, because much of what you see is dehydration.
Is sudden body dryness after 40 related to perimenopause?
It can be. Falling oestrogen in perimenopause reduces how much water skin holds, so dryness and itching increase. Take short lukewarm baths and apply a thick body cream within 3 minutes. If it does not improve in 2–3 weeks, or you have other symptoms, see a doctor.
Which sunscreen suits dry skin over 40 in winter?
A creamy sunscreen, such as La Roche Posay Anthelios Uvmune 400 Hydrating Cream SPF50+ or Cerave Hydrating Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF50. Apply two finger-lengths to face and neck after moisturiser and reapply at midday if outdoors. UVA reaches you even on foggy days.
