When you get home in the evening, first check what is on your face.
If you are wearing sunscreen or makeup, remove it first with Simple Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water or Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil.
Then wash with a gentle cleanser in lukewarm water, such as CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Normal to Dry, massaging softly for 30 seconds.
If it is only dust, one gentle cleanser is enough; you do not need to double cleanse.
Moisturise within three minutes of washing. Retinol or acids, if you use them, go on at bedtime. For the order across the whole day, see the 24-hour winter skincare routine.
Why the evening wash matters so much
Over the day your face collects sunscreen, maybe makeup, sweat, its own oil and the city's dust and fumes. In winter Dhaka's air carries more dust, because there is no rain and fog traps smoke near the ground. If all of that stays on overnight:
- pores can clog and cause breakouts,
- your night moisturiser does not work as well,
- dust aggravates dry skin.
There is another side too. Winter skin is already dry. A harsh face wash, hot water or hard rubbing strips the skin's own oils. So the goal is: clean, but not tight. Read more about Dhaka's dust in skincare for Dhaka pollution and dust.
Double cleanse or not: a simple decision
| What was on your face today | What to do |
|---|---|
| Only dust and sweat, no sunscreen | One gentle cleanse |
| Light sunscreen (gel or essence) | One gentle cleanse, thoroughly, for 30–40 seconds |
| Water-resistant sunscreen, a sun stick or makeup | Double cleanse: oil or micellar water, then a gentle cleanser |
| Heavy makeup (weddings, events) | Double cleanse, removing eye and lip makeup separately first |
On dry or sensitive skin, double cleansing every day can increase tightness, so do it only on the days you need it. The full method is in what double cleansing is and how to do it.
The evening routine, step by step
- Wash your hands. Do not touch your face with outside hands.
- Remove sunscreen or makeup (if needed): on a dry face, massage 1–2 pumps of cleansing oil gently for 30–60 seconds, then add a little water until it turns milky and rinse. Or soak a cotton pad in micellar water, hold it on the skin for ten seconds and wipe gently. Athena Beaute Cotton Wool Cosmetic Pads are soft for this.
- Gentle cleanser: wet your face with lukewarm water and massage a pea-sized amount of cleanser for 30 seconds. Remember the sides of the nose, the hairline and under the chin.
- Rinse and press dry: with a soft, clean towel. Do not rub.
- Moisturiser within three minutes: while your face is still slightly damp. For very dry skin, Cerave Moisturising Cream For Dry to Very Dry Skin; for red or sensitive skin, Purito Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream.
- Lips and hands: cream on the backs of your hands, balm on your lips.
The rule after a bath is different and is covered in the three-minute rule after a bath.
Which cleanser suits whom
- Dry and normal skin: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Normal to Dry. Low foam, no tight feeling after rinsing.
- On a budget: Simple Kind to Skin Moisturising Face Wash.
- Dry skin wearing both sunscreen and makeup: Cetaphil Nourishing Oil to Foam Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin, which turns from oil to foam.
- Oily or acne-prone skin: a light foaming wash still works in winter, but use a salicylic acid face wash no more than once a day.
Makeup removers:
- Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water Makeup Remover: comfortable on sensitive skin.
- Simple Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water: fragrance-free, enough for light sunscreen.
- Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil: for water-resistant sunscreen and makeup.
More comparisons are in which face wash is good in winter.
Water: lukewarm, not hot
Who does not want hot water in winter? But very hot water melts and strips the oils on your face, so it ends up red and tight after washing. The rule is simple: water that feels comfortable on your hand but not hot. Finish washing within a minute. For the effect of hot water, read hot-water baths and your skin in winter.
When do treatments go on: evening or bedtime?
There are often three or four hours between getting home and going to bed. Split the work:
- In the evening (when you get home): cleanse and moisturise. This is the main job.
- At bedtime: retinol, acids or spot treatments, if you use them. If your evening cream went on hours ago, splash your face with plain water, let it dry, then apply the treatment, then moisturiser.
- Retinol in winter: on dry skin, two or three nights a week, a pea-sized amount, on a dry face. For example The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane. If it stings, take a break. No retinol during pregnancy or breastfeeding; talk to your doctor.
- Do not use retinol and acids on the same night. On dry winter skin that is too much.
The full bedtime routine is in the winter night routine.
Mistakes almost everyone makes
- Leaving the face unwashed until bedtime, then falling asleep tired without washing.
- Scrubbing like you are cleaning a pot, or using a scrub every day.
- Very hot water.
- Only wiping with micellar water and going to sleep after a whole day in dust.
- Washing your face with bath soap. Body soap can be far too harsh for the face.
- Sitting for half an hour after washing without cream.
- Using the same towel for face and body, and not washing the towel.
The Bangladesh reality
Many people here get home in the evening after traffic jams, on a bus or bike, covered in dust. Then it is straight to cooking, the children's homework, tea. In many homes the tap water is icy in winter, and without a geyser lukewarm water is hard to get. The fix: mix hot water from a flask or kettle into a bucket of cold water. And keep the routine short: oil if needed, then cleanser, then cream. Five minutes. Short answers for every time of day are in our Winter FAQ Centre.

Why authentic products matter
A cleanser and cream you use on your face every day can cause stinging, rashes and breakouts if it is counterfeit, through the wrong ingredients or adulterants. TheSkinProof is an invoice-verified skincare marketplace: the source invoice of every product is checked. If a product is proven counterfeit, you get 2× your money back; claims must be made within 7 days of delivery. Delivery across Bangladesh, cash on delivery available.
When to see a doctor
- Stinging or red, scaly patches that do not improve after two to three weeks of a gentle cleanser and moisturiser.
- Painful, deep breakouts or pus-filled bumps that keep spreading.
- Swelling around the eyes, or eyes that stay red after removing makeup.
- Stinging and peeling that continue for days after you stop retinol.

Frequently asked questions
How should I wash my face when I get home in the evening?
First check whether you are wearing sunscreen or makeup. If you are, remove it with Simple Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water or Skin1004 Light Cleansing Oil. Then wash with a gentle cleanser such as CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser in lukewarm water for 30 seconds, and moisturise within three minutes.
Do I need to double cleanse in winter?
Not everyone does. Double cleanse when you wear water-resistant sunscreen or makeup: oil or micellar water first, then a gentle cleanser. If it is only light sunscreen or dust, one gentle cleanser is enough. Double cleansing dry skin every single day can increase tightness.
Is micellar water enough on its own?
It is good for lifting light makeup and sunscreen, but after a day of city dust and sweat it is better to follow with a rinse or a gentle cleanser. Hold a soaked cotton pad on the skin for ten seconds, then wipe softly instead of scrubbing.
Should I apply retinol in the evening or at bedtime?
At bedtime, not straight after washing. Waiting 10–15 minutes for your face to dry fully reduces stinging. On dry winter skin, two or three nights a week is enough, followed by moisturiser. Do not use retinol during pregnancy or breastfeeding; talk to your doctor.
