The short answer

The most common reason the whole body itches in winter is dry skin, made worse by long hot showers, harsh soap, wool worn straight against the skin and dry indoor air. Take a 10-minute lukewarm bath, swap soap for Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar or Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Normal To Dry & Sensitive Skin, and within 3 minutes of the bath apply a thick fragrance-free cream all over, such as Bioderma Atoderm Crème Ultra-Nourishing Cream or Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin. Most people feel relief within a week. But if the itch is much worse at night, if someone else at home itches too, if there are bumps or round patches, or if it has not eased in two weeks, see a doctor. Do not buy and use a steroid cream on your own.

Why the body itches in winter

In winter the air holds less moisture. The top layer of skin, called the barrier, cannot hold on to water. Tiny cracks form, and the nerve endings in those cracks fire easily. The result is itch. Doctors often call this "winter itch" or dry-skin itch. A few habits drive it:

  • Hot baths. Hot water feels lovely in winter but washes away the skin's natural oils. The hotter and longer the bath, the drier the skin. Details in hot baths in winter.
  • Soap. Ordinary bath soap, antiseptic soap or laundry soap is alkaline. Scrubbed all over the body, it strips the oil completely.
  • Wool. Sweaters, mufflers and wool blankets prickle when they touch bare skin. On dry skin that makes the itch much worse.
  • Dry rooms. Room heaters and closed rooms dry the air further.
  • Drinking less water. You feel less thirsty in winter, but water alone does not fix dry skin. You still need a moisturiser on the outside.
  • Age. After 60 the skin naturally makes less oil, so parents and grandparents itch more in winter. There is a separate guide for them: dry, itchy skin in older adults.

The routine that stops the itch: when, how much, how

In the bath

  1. Keep the water lukewarm. It should feel comfortable on your hand without turning the skin red.
  2. Finish in 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Use soap only on the underarms, groin and feet. Arms, legs and back do not need soap every day. For a gentle bar use Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar; for a liquid, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Normal To Dry & Sensitive Skin.
  4. Do not scrub with a loofah, pumice or rough gamchha.
  5. Pat dry with a soft towel and leave the skin slightly damp.

Within 3 minutes of the bath

  1. Apply a thick fragrance-free cream all over. About one teaspoon per arm and about two teaspoons per leg. For a whole family, the large tub of Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin is convenient. For very dry, flaky skin, Bioderma Atoderm Crème Ultra-Nourishing Cream is more soothing. If you want something lighter, use CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin. Why these 3 minutes matter is explained in the 3-minute rule after a bath.

At night

  1. Before sleep, apply cream again where it itches most: shins, back, waist and the outer arms.
  2. On very rough small patches, such as the elbows or a spot on the shin, apply a thin layer of Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume.
  3. Keep nails short so that even if you scratch in your sleep you do not tear the skin.

Through the day

  • When an itch strikes, instead of scratching, press a cool damp cloth on it for 5 minutes, then apply cream.
  • Wear a full-sleeve cotton layer under wool sweaters.
  • Rinse washed clothes well to get the detergent out. Skip heavily perfumed fabric softener.
  • If you run a room heater, keep a bucket of water in the room and do not sit too close to the heater.
  • To fit all this into the day, see the 24-hour winter skincare routine.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use steroid creams on your own. Many "itch ointments" sold over the pharmacy counter contain a steroid that should not be used without a doctor's advice, sometimes mixed with an antifungal. On a fungal infection they first seem to help, then the patch grows and spreads, and long use thins the skin.
  • Rubbing on mustard oil and sitting in the sun. Many people find it soothing, but for some it irritates the skin. Details in the mustard oil guide.
  • Bathing in Dettol or Savlon water. This dries the skin further. If the itch comes from dryness rather than germs, it does nothing useful.
  • Perfumed lotion. Fragrance can sting itchy skin. Choose fragrance-free.
  • Applying cream once a day and stopping there. Very dry winter skin needs it twice a day.
  • Scratching hard. It tears the skin, makes the itch worse and can lead to infection.

The Bangladesh reality

From Dhaka to Rangpur, most homes heat water for winter baths, and the hotter the better is the common belief. A whole family shares one scented or antiseptic soap. Quilts and blankets get sunned, but the wool blanket still touches bare skin. Together these push winter itch up. At the same time, scabies (khos-pachra) and ringworm (daad) spread easily here, especially in hostels, madrasas and large families. So it is not right to assume every itch is just dryness. How to recognise ringworm is in ringworm (tinea), and if you have eczema, read eczema care in winter. All body-area winter questions are together on the Winter FAQ: body areas page, and for care from scalp to heels, see the head-to-toe guide.

When to see a doctor

Dry-skin itch usually eases a lot with one to two weeks of care. If any of the following happen, do not wait; see a doctor:

  • The itch is much worse at night and someone else at home itches too. Small bumps between the fingers, on the wrists, waist, armpits or near the genitals can mean scabies. It needs medicine prescribed by a doctor, and the whole family treated together.
  • Round patches with a reddish edge and a paler centre that slowly grow, especially in the groin, waist or under the breasts. This can be ringworm or another fungal infection.
  • Red, scaly or weeping patches that keep coming back to the same place. This may be eczema.
  • Nothing visible on the skin, but the whole body itches for more than two weeks. Liver, kidney or thyroid problems, diabetes, iron deficiency or a medicine side effect can be behind it. Go quickly if your eyes or urine turn yellow, or you have weight loss, night sweats or severe tiredness. A blood test may be needed.
  • Sudden raised welts (hives), especially with swollen lips or eyes or difficulty breathing: go to emergency immediately.
  • Scratching has made sores, or there is pus, fever or pain.
  • In pregnancy, intense itching on the palms and soles should be reported to your own doctor without delay.
  • A child itching all over and losing sleep should see a paediatrician.

If a doctor prescribes a steroid or another medicine, ask how long to use it and where, and do not increase it yourself or share it with others.

Why buy authentic

Itchy, cracked skin is already sensitive. A fake "fragrance-free" cream with hidden fragrance or unknown chemicals can make the itch worse. TheSkinProof is an invoice-verified skincare marketplace: we check the source invoice for every product. If a product is proven counterfeit you get 2× your money back, with claims made within 7 days of delivery. We deliver across Bangladesh, and cash on delivery is available.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my whole body itch in winter?

Most often it is dry skin. Winter air is dry, and long hot baths, harsh soap and wool against the skin strip its oils. Tiny cracks form and itch. A lukewarm short bath, a gentle bar and a thick cream right after the bath usually bring relief within a week.

Which cream is best for winter itch?

A thick fragrance-free cream applied within 3 minutes of the bath and again before bed. Bioderma Atoderm Crème Ultra-Nourishing Cream suits very dry skin, and the large tub of Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin works well for a family. Use about two teaspoons per leg.

Is itching worse at night a sign of scabies?

It can be, especially if others at home also itch and there are small bumps between the fingers, on the wrists, waist or armpits. Scabies is contagious and does not go away with moisturiser. It needs medicine from a doctor, and the whole family should be treated together.

Can I use a steroid itch cream from the pharmacy?

Not without a doctor. Many pharmacy itch creams contain a steroid that is not meant for self-use, sometimes mixed with an antifungal. On a fungal infection they can make the patch spread, and long use thins the skin. For dry-skin itch, a fragrance-free moisturiser is usually enough.
