The short answer

In winter, Sylhet, Sreemangal and Bandarban are colder and windier than Dhaka, and the open hill sun is surprisingly strong. Pack four things: a small gentle face wash (Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Normal To Dry Skin), a small rich cream (Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin), a small sunscreen (Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide SPF50+ PA++++) and a lip balm with SPF (Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++). For the body, a small lotion such as CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin. In the morning wash your face, apply cream, then sunscreen; at midday reapply sunscreen and lip balm; at night take a short lukewarm shower at the hotel and moisturise straight away. The base routine is in our 24-hour winter skincare routine.

Why skin dries out faster in the hills in winter

Many travellers notice that within two days their lips have cracked, their cheeks are red and stinging, and the skin beside the nose is flaking. There are a few simple reasons.

  • It is colder. At Nilgiri, Nilachal or towards Thanchi in Bandarban, early mornings and nights are much colder than in Dhaka. Sreemangal often records some of the coldest winter nights in the country. Cold skin makes less oil.
  • It is windier. Hilltops, open tea-garden slopes and boat or launch decks put the wind straight on your face. Wind pulls water out of the skin, so cheeks and nose turn red and sting. This is windburn; we explain it in our windburn guide.
  • The sun is stronger. Air is thinner at height, so more UV reaches you. Because it feels cold you don't notice the sun, but after a day of trekking or riding in a jeep the nose and cheeks are burnt.
  • Long journeys. Dhaka to Sylhet or Bandarban is six to ten hours by bus or train. Dry air from the AC, dust from the window, too little water and too little sleep all leave skin tight.
  • Hotel water. Many hotel geysers run very hot, and in some places the water is high in iron or minerals. A long, very hot shower strips the skin's oils.

What to pack: a compact list

You don't need big bottles on a trip. For two to five days the small sizes are enough, and your bag stays light.

  1. Face wash: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Normal To Dry Skin (25 ml) for dry skin. For oily or combination skin, COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser (20 ml). Don't wash your face more than twice a day.
  2. Face cream: for dry skin, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin (28 g). If you prefer something lighter, iUNIK Beta-Glucan Daily Moisture Cream (15 ml).
  3. Sunscreen: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide SPF50+ PA++++ or IUNIK Centella Calming Daily Sunscreen SPF50+, both in small sizes. For repeated top-ups, Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF-50 is easy to keep in a pocket and swipe over the nose and cheeks without messy hands.
  4. Lip balm: Fix Derma Lip Shield SPF50 PA+++ by day, Laneige Lip sleeping mask at bedtime.
  5. Body lotion: CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin (88 ml), for hands, elbows, feet and the whole body after a shower.
  6. Extras: a small water bottle, a cap or hat, sunglasses, a muffler or scarf to cover your face in the wind, and some tissues. If you wear makeup, decant a little micellar water into a small bottle, for example from Simple Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water.

We don't have a dedicated hand cream or foot cream on our shelf right now. For hands and heels, use the same body lotion a little more generously at night; that does the job.

The travel-day routine: when, how much, how

Journey day (bus, train or launch)

  1. Before you leave, wash your face and apply a pea-sized amount of cream. If you travel by day, add sunscreen on top, because the sun falls on your face by the window.
  2. On the way, reapply lip balm every two to three hours. Don't lick your lips; that makes cracking worse.
  3. If your face feels tight on an AC bus or train, wipe it with a tissue or clean hands and apply a little cream again.
  4. Drink water. Many people drink less to avoid toilet stops, which only adds headaches and tiredness.

Days in the hills or tea gardens

  1. Morning: wash with lukewarm or room-temperature water, apply cream, and after two minutes apply sunscreen. Face and neck need about two finger-lengths of sunscreen. Don't forget the ears and the back of the neck.
  2. Daytime: in the sun, reapply every two hours, and sooner if you sweat or wipe your face. If you carry a stick, swipe it over the nose, cheeks and forehead a few times.
  3. In the wind: on a hilltop or a boat, cover the nose and cheeks with a scarf. It protects better than any cream.
  4. Evening: back at the hotel, wash your face and apply cream. Ordinary face wash removes sunscreen; if you used a thick sunscreen or makeup, take it off beforehand with micellar water.
  5. Night: a lukewarm shower under 10 minutes, pat dry with a towel and apply body lotion within three minutes. Use a little more cream on the face, and lip mask on the lips.

About hotel water

Test the geyser water on your hand before you step in and keep it lukewarm. Why very hot showers hurt skin is explained in our winter hot-shower guide. If the water smells of iron or looks reddish, don't delay your cream after washing. Over a few days this does no lasting harm.

Cox's Bazar or Saint Martin's: what changes

By the sea it is less cold in winter, but sun, wind and salt come together. Sand and water reflect sunlight back onto your face. If you go into the sea or spend the day on the beach, a water-resistant sunscreen is better, such as Missha Water Proof Sun Milk SPF50+ PA++++. Dry off after a swim and reapply. Salt water left to dry makes skin tight, so rinse with fresh water at the hotel and apply lotion. A lip balm with SPF matters even more here.

In the hills the main problem is cold, dry wind, so you need more rich cream. By the sea the main problem is sun and salt, so you reapply sunscreen more often. The bag is the same; only how often you use each item changes.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping sunscreen because "there's no sun in winter". In the hills your nose can burn red in a single day.
  • Carrying big bottles. A heavy bag, and a cap that pops open over your clothes. Use small sizes and a zip bag.
  • Opening a brand-new product on the trip itself. If you have never used a cream or sunscreen, test it on your inner arm a week before you leave.
  • Licking lips and peeling skin. It bleeds and the cracks get worse. Lip care is covered in our winter cracked lips guide.
  • Long, very hot showers. They feel good on a tired body, but skin is rough by the next morning.
  • Washing your face with hotel soap. Many hotel soaps are harsh. Bring your own small face wash.
  • Drinking too little water. Very common on long journeys.

The Bangladesh reality

Winter is peak season for Sylhet, Sreemangal, Bandarban, Sajek and Cox's Bazar. Many people take the night bus, get off in the morning and head straight out, with no time even to wash their face. So the shorter the routine, the better: cream, sunscreen and lip balm are enough. Good sunscreen or lip balm is hard to find in small hill markets, and tourist areas also have fake products. Buy before you go. We deliver across Bangladesh with cash on delivery available, so ordering a few days before the trip is enough. More tips for long days outdoors are in our winter skincare for people who work outdoors, and more answers like these are on the winter lifestyle questions page.

Why buy authentic

On a trip, a fake sunscreen is the most dangerous product: it says SPF 50 but gives almost no protection while you spend the day in the sun. TheSkinProof is an invoice-verified skincare marketplace: each product is checked against its supply invoice. If a product is proven counterfeit you get 2× your money back; claims must be made within 7 days of delivery.

When to see a doctor

  • If sunburn blisters, or comes with fever or dizziness.
  • If your face or lips swell, or itching and red bumps spread after a new product.
  • If a crack in the lips or skin oozes pus or the pain keeps increasing.
  • If redness and peeling haven't eased two weeks after you return.

Frequently asked questions

What skincare should I pack for a winter trip to Bandarban or Sylhet?

Four items are enough: a small gentle face wash such as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser 25 ml, a rich cream such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream 28 g, a small sunscreen such as Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun, and a lip balm with SPF. Add CeraVe Moisturising Lotion 88 ml for the body. Small sizes keep the bag light.

Do I need sunscreen in the hills in winter?

Yes, even more than at home. More UV reaches you at height, and the cold hides the sun. After your morning cream, apply about two finger-lengths of sunscreen to face and neck, and reapply every two hours in the sun. Remember the nose, ears and the back of the neck.

My face dries out on long bus journeys. What helps?

Before leaving, wash your face and apply a pea-sized amount of cream, with sunscreen on top for a daytime trip. Reapply lip balm every two to three hours and a little cream with clean hands if your skin feels tight. Drink water, and turn the AC vent away from your face.

Which sunscreen should I take to Cox's Bazar in winter?

If you swim or spend the day on the beach, take a water-resistant sunscreen such as Missha Water Proof Sun Milk SPF50+. Reapply after drying off from the sea, and every two hours even when dry. Rinse salt off with fresh water at the hotel, apply lotion, and keep an SPF lip balm handy.

Is it a good idea to try a new cream on a trip?

Test it at least a week before you go: apply it to your inner arm or behind the ear for two or three days. If there are no red bumps, itching or stinging, pack it. If an untested product reacts in the hills, you have no way to replace it.
