Quick answer

A woman's winter routine: a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser for your skin type (such as CeraVe Moisturizing Cream or Neutrogena Hydro Boost), Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun every day, and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask at night, plus fixes for cracking makeup, period breakouts and forehead acne under a hijab.

The short answer

A woman's winter routine comes down to 4 things: a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser that suits your skin type, sunscreen every day, and lip and hand care at night. For dry skin use CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Normal to Dry and Cerave Moisturizing Cream For Normal To Dry Skin; for oily skin, CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser and Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Aqua Gel. In the morning, Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide SPF50+ PA++++. To stop makeup cracking, moisturise and wait 5 minutes before makeup. At night, Laneige Lip sleeping mask on the lips. If you get forehead acne under your hijab, wear a cotton underscarf and use COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser 2 to 3 times a week.

Why a separate guide for women

Winter dryness is the same for everyone, but a woman's day adds a few extras: makeup, hormonal ups and downs around periods, a hijab or orna around the face all day, hands washed again and again in the kitchen, and wedding-invitation season. This guide puts all of that together in plain language so every question gets an answer straight away. For the general winter guide, read winter skincare: the complete guide.

The daily schedule

  1. 7 to 9 am: wash, moisturise (two pea-sized drops), then after 5 minutes sunscreen (a line the length of two fingers for face and neck). Wishcare Ceramide Tinted Lip Balm SPF50 on the lips.
  2. Midday: if you are outdoors, reapply sunscreen and lip balm. A little cream after washing your hands.
  3. Evening: when you get home, remove makeup and sunscreen and wash your face.
  4. Before bed: a little more moisturiser, a lip mask, cream on hands and heels. The full night routine: the winter night routine.
  5. Once a week: gentle exfoliation is enough. No more than that in winter.

For a routine built around every hour of the day, see the 24-hour winter skincare routine.

A makeup base that does not crack

In winter, foundation flakes and cracks beside the nose and at the corners of the mouth because the skin underneath is dry. The fix is not in the makeup but before it:

  1. After washing, put 2 to 3 drops of The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 or Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Serum on damp skin.
  2. Moisturiser on top. Wait 5 minutes; this is the step most people skip.
  3. Then a sunscreen with a slightly dewy finish, such as Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Gel SPF50+ PA++++ or Dot & Key Blueberry Hydrate Barrier Repair Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++. It doubles as your primer.
  4. Use less foundation and press it in with a damp sponge. Powder only on the T-zone.
  5. If skin feels tight during the day, press a drop of moisturiser onto the dry spots with your fingertip.

Removing makeup: at night, use Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water Makeup Remover, or Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil for heavy makeup, then a gentle cleanser. Never sleep in makeup. For wedding season, read winter weddings: skin prep for the bride.

Periods and winter breakouts

In the week before a period, breakouts on the chin and jawline from hormonal changes are very normal. Many people think dry winter skin will not break out, but dry skin builds up dead cells at the mouth of the pores, and heavy creams block them further.

  • Put COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch 24 Ct on a pimple and do not pick it.
  • Use COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser 2 to 3 evenings a week, and a gentle cleanser on the other days.
  • Do not skip moisturiser; just choose a lighter one.
  • Do not put lemon, toothpaste or baking soda on pimples. They increase stinging and dark marks.
  • If you get many painful, deep pimples every month along with irregular periods or extra facial hair, it could be PCOS. See a doctor.

Hijab, scarves and forehead acne

A hijab or orna rubs against the forehead and chin all day. Add sweat, oil and hair products, and small pimples appear along the hairline.

  1. Wear a cotton underscarf and wash it 2 to 3 times a week.
  2. Do not let pins or a tight band press into the forehead.
  3. On the forehead, use a light Dot & Key Cica Calming Oil Free Moisturizer instead of a thick cream.
  4. On days you oil your hair, wash the hairline well.
  5. Take off the hijab and wash your face as soon as you get home.

For hair care under a hijab, read hair care under a hijab.

Lips

In the day, a balm with SPF such as Wishcare Ceramide Tinted Lip Balm SPF50 or Dot & Key Barrier Repair Ceramide + Peptide Lip Balm - Red Romance. At night, a thick layer of Laneige Lip sleeping mask. Before lipstick, put on balm and wait 2 minutes. Matte lipstick dries lips more in winter, so give them a few days off each week.

Hands: the kitchen and constant washing

Washing dishes and clothes and washing your hands again and again makes fingertips crack in winter. To be honest, we do not have a dedicated hand cream on our shelf right now. As a small tube for your bag or the kitchen, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Dry to Very Dry, Sensitive Skin works well. Use a pea-sized amount after every hand wash. Rubber gloves for washing dishes help the most.

Body

Within 3 minutes of your bath, CeraVe Moisturising Lotion for Dry to Very Dry Skin, or Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Glow Body Lotion on a budget. A little extra on the shins and elbows. The rule in detail: the 3-minute after-bath rule.

Hair

In winter hair turns rough and the ends dry out. Once a week use TRESemmé Keratin Smooth 3-Min Smoothing Sleek + Shine Hair Mask, and after shampoo put 2 to 3 drops of Livon Anti Frizz Serum for All Hair Types on the ends. If you like, put Ribana Organic Coconut Oil on the ends the night before you shampoo. Do not wash hair in very hot water. Read more in caring for dry, rough hair.

If money is tight, prioritise in this order: moisturiser, then lip balm, then sunscreen. For students there is a separate guide: budget winter skincare for hostel students. Past 30? Read winter skincare for women over 30 and 40.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

During this time, skip retinol or retinoids and strong acids. A gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser and sunscreen are enough, but check what you use with your doctor. More detail: safe winter skincare in pregnancy.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping sunscreen in winter. UV is there even on foggy days.
  • Putting on foundation straight after moisturiser.
  • Sleeping in makeup.
  • Picking pimples, especially before a period.
  • Wearing the same underscarf all week.
  • Body lotion or coconut oil on the face.
  • Starting 3 or 4 new products at once.

The Bangladesh reality

School run in the morning, then the office, then cooking, and five minutes for yourself once everyone is asleep: that is a real day for many women. So keep the routine short. Cleanser and moisturiser in the bathroom; sunscreen, lip balm and a small cream tube in your bag; a lip mask by the pillow. With Dhaka's dust and pollution, do not skip the evening face wash. In the season of winter weddings and invitations, removing heavy makeup at night is the single most important step. The old habit of glycerin mixed with rose water is fine, but put a moisturiser on top.

When to see a doctor

  • Painful, deep pimples that leave marks and do not improve after 2 to 3 months of steady care.
  • Irregular periods, extra facial hair and acne together (this may be PCOS).
  • Red, itchy, rough patches that keep coming back.
  • Hands that crack and bleed or ooze pus.
  • Sudden intense itching during pregnancy, especially on the palms and soles. See a doctor without delay.
  • Any product that makes your face swell, burn or break out in a rash.
